Oil usage on 1.2/1.4 MQB Cars

Featured Replies

I realise I don't have a Oct Mk3 however my 1.2 TSI Mk 3 Leon is same platform/same engine.

Car registered in May 2013, come January 2014 at 8 months old I got a warning light for oil despite checking regularly and I had to add 1 litre of oil.  Car was then serviced on fixed routine in May 2014.

Come this week in January 2015 (another 8 months) I get yet again the oil warning light, I'm now on 12,000 miles.  Just added 1.5 litres and level seems ok again.

I can confirm there appears to be no leaks and the light comes on without warning even though I do check the oil level.

Having owned various Turbo Petrol/Diesel over the years none have required oil between services.

Is there something amiss here?

Normal for modern engines to 'use' super thin oil that is what makes the engine so efficient (thanks to being extra slippy).

I've had BMW and Audi's using as much as 1 litre/1000 miles and this is still considered OK.

You should get free top ups from your dealer (I always have, and often been told on pickup to expect usage and there is a litre of oil under the boot floor for you).

On the problem Skoda Fabia Mk2 vRS 2010-2012 1.4 TSI 132kw CAVE Engine of which many have high oil consumption

& which later cars from 2012-2014 got revised engine CTHE & Engine Management.

The figures that are in the Owners Manual is 'May use Oil depending on Style of Driving & Conditions as 0.5 litres /1000 km (621 miles)

This is nonesense, a VWG figure dealers & Customer Services at Skoda, VW, Seat & Audi quote,

and covers all engines 3 or 4 cylinder petrol or diesel 44 kw to 136 kw minimum.

So monitor your oil use,

be sure not to overfill but do not trust that the correct amount of oil was in when the car was serviced,

& always dip it cold and hot after Services to see where they had the oil level.

Read your Owners Manual on Oil Checks,

It should be a 'Hot Check',  Operating Temperature, not as lost in translation sometimes with Skoda 'Warm'  where VW say 'Operating Temperature'.

Owners manuals might say that only the '44 kw engines' are checked 'Cold'.

But anyway a Stone Cold dip should let you know there is enough oil in & a Hot Dip done and you can compare.

This is the Euro 5 1.4 TSI Twincharger Story 2009-2012,

But not to be expected with a 1.2 / 1.4 TSI

Bearing in mind the oil burning issues of the old 1.4Tsi TwinCharger engine I have been keeping a close eye on my 1.4Tsi oil consumption. So far (after 5000 miles) it has used virtually zero oil.

However my wife's 2010 Fabia with the 1.2Tsi engine (yes I know this is the previous generation) used quite a lot of oil initially (I can't recall the precise numbers now), but then settled down. It hardly burns any now.

I've got a Rapid 1.2tsi and hasn't used any yet but I've only done 2300 miles.

I have the 1.4 TSI. I got the oil warning at about 20k km. It took slightly more than 1L

Cheers Guys, looks like it may just be normal then, checked oil today at warm after 2 days running and its now at the top limit, booked it in for a check anyway but may just have to accept that more modern turbo cars will use oil.
