205/40 R17 equivalent?

Featured Replies

I have a Monte Carlo with the black 17" alloys, and I'm looking at getting some winter tires, thing is, the uber low profile tyres, whilst nice and responsive, are a bit harsh over the bumps. I'd like a bit more rubber between me and the road, not to mention that they'll be less easily damaged by a pot hole. So, what 205/40 r17 equivalents are there? In 16" probably but possibly 15"..... Ideally keeping the tire as wide as possible and with the offset the same, ie, the outer edge of the wheel stays in the same position as with the current 17"wheels... If that makes sense....

Thanks in advance.

I have octy 16's for winter with 205/45/16 which matches RR ...

edit, gonna post a pic now ;)

Likewise I run 205/45/16 for my winters

I also run 205*45*16 for winter tyres

Yep I run 205/45/16, same as the original Mk1 VRS which is what i bought them for originally, but now just run them on steel rims.

Thanks guys, 16" looks pretty good actually, it seems that 205/40r17is a bit of an oddball size, so perhaps changing the tire size would also give a better selection of winter tires too.... Thanks again, those 5spokes look pretty good..... Hmm

Sharkrider, have you got a better pic of your wheels? the look pretty swell, and Jonny5ive, are those Audi wheels on a Skoda? Does part interchangeability go that far?

Nothing to stop you putting 215/40 R 17's on which is the size on the vRS's 3 sister cars with the same engines & Gearboxes,

Thats what my tyres are i have on now, and they have Snow Flake markings, and are OK but just not great at giving more sidewall height.

Yes, indeed they are. IIRC Audi speedlines. A good few interchangeable parts across the marques. If you're looking at different wheels, there are a number of measurements to be aware of.

1. Stud pattern = 5x100 is what you need. Shared with mk1 Octavia, mk1&2 fabia and mk1 Roomster and numerous other VAG cars.

2. Centre Bore - 57.1mm is what you need, see above for compatibility and again most VAG vehicles.

3. Offset - known as ET. My OEM 17" rims have an offset of ET50 whereas the Audi rims have an offset of ET42. The face of the Audi alloys therefore 'poke' out 8mm further than the OEM rims.

Hope this helps

Nice one, thanks for the help guys!

Um, what equivalent sizes are there with a 195/??r16/15

I'd comment that actually 205/45/16 doesn't have the largest of choice with winters - I was forced to buy that size as I originally wanted them for Mk1 VRS alloys.

Personally if buying again I would go 15" and a narrower section. 195/55/15 is as good as identical as is 185/60/15 very close with all major brands having winters for them.

I think I might well do that, get some 16inch or 15inch rims and keep the 17" ones for summer usage, or if the ride is that much better with the fatter tires, get two sets of wheels....

What width wheels can you fit a 195/50 r16 on? Would they have to be 6"

pleanty of tyres for them in 205/45/16, however I will be putting 215/45/16's on when they wear out, I run 215/40/17's in the summer ;)

they are octy mark I elegance wheels , they need spacers as the offset isnt right, I currently have 15mm on the front and 20mm on the rear :)

I think they look good, quite like the audi wheels, (but very cheap!lol I bought the 4 wheels with goodyear tyres with decent tread, for £300 from a forum member :) )

I sprayed them black myself :)

I'm using standard Skoda steelies on my Monte in the winter, tyre size 195/55R15 straight swap. Think I paid about £180 for the steelies from Skoda and another £200 for tyres. It's a better ride but aesthetically look **** even with black wheel trims.
