Remap discussion thread

Featured Replies

Or perhaps their not rising to the bait.

Personally I feel that although these type of threads start off with good intentions and are generally interesting...they do degenerate to "this tuner is better than that one" etc.

It is a fact..before anyone says otherwise.

:D

I think Adrians comments sum up how I feel about this.

Certain people here cannot seem to accept that a new tuner may have something to offer, lets not forget that Jabba/Revo/JBS all started out as new kids on the block, and, it is only the competition between them to be the best that has got us to the level of tuning we are now at and enjoy.

Lets all just agree to disagree, and enjoy our own cars, and do what we are supposed to do......................................."DRIVE THEM"

yeah i have to agree. im still unsure who to go with, more down to my location than anything else. i used jabba with my octy and was so pleased with it.

this time i may try something different.

C-C, Revo, Jabba and IP (plus more) are all well know tuners. people who have these can always help others that are new to the tuning scene and forums to make there mind up. honest and factual based reviews are always good. tbh i dont need to know who is better by 3bhp etc. like me, most want a good reliable remap and dont want to be disappointed. after hearing reports all the major tuners will supply this, just in different ways. some MAY and MAY NOT be better but the more facts we know the better

All the talk and discussion re what is achievable etc is not the most important thing to me.

As someone 'umming and erring 'about doing it (and thereafter understanding more about it than just increased bhp/torque/mpg) I just get concerned each time I read a post from someone whose re mapped car has gone into 'limp mode.'

I know too little about remaps, but as well as the downside effects,it is the extras that you need.Do you need better brakes? suspension? what else should you look for.I expect soon to walk into a tuner with my octy vRS as it is then walk out with it as it is except having about 220 bhp instead of 180

Apologies if my point is too basic :o

Loz,

I understand your view point as reliability is a must for me as well.

Most car go into limp mode mainly for unrelated things...coilapcks, dv.....coilpacks we can't plan for...purely because even the latest version have had failures.

DV...we know know that the latest OEM ones are better but the originals were prone to splitting hence the advice to change to a piston type valve, which is more reliable but not necessarily better in terms of performance. People will get CEL light if they fit the wrong type....we tell em not to do it but do it they will.

I look at those people who have heavily modded their car and see what type of driving they do....Badger Bill....obvioulsy a Granny driver....has IHI-ed Beeza....absolutely rags it....ran it with standard internals for a long time at approx 350bhp and did have a problem.

Stu has circ 250bhp....3 cannonballs or it 2, no problems.

Jon...TaviaRS...many trips to the Ring and various track day...ok his engine blew but it wasn't down to the map.

Yes...mods will reduce the life expectancy of your engine but....and very importantly...it's the way you drive it that will determine if it goes pop.

Abuse it and it will let go eventually.....

IMHO. :D

The brakes on the Octy vRS are what many Golf owners upgrade to when remapped so I doubt you would need a major upgrade but a pad change may give more confidence. I'm also under the impression that the standard suspension setup on the Octy vRS is better than the equivalent Golf so an upgrade isn't essential, however if you want to sharpen things up you could consider a rear anti-roll bar.

My main recommendation if you haven't already done it would be to change the tyre's to some grippy ones in a 225/45/17 size (assuming you have standard wheels.

Also with the remap an uprated DV is advisable as the standard one is likely to pop if it hasn't already.

Laurence - my advice to you would be that if you are umming and erring about it, don't fully understand it and are getting more and more concerned about your car going into 'limp mode', then unless you are really craving more performance from your car then don't bother getting a remap!

It's all too easy to get swept up with the herd on here - i should know, my car was supposed to be my daily commuter car leaving me to have something crazy for weekends!! DOH!

As an afterthought prehaps you could try one of the free trials from Revo or APR to give you an idea how your car will perform once remapped.

If anybody is thinking of going down this route (highly advised) and you don't end up going for the full product for one reason or another then be sure to ask the tuner to reflash the ECU with the stock code.

After the trials have finished you will still have left over bits of code on the ECU relating to the tuners map (signature etc) which could cause problems in the event of an insurance claim.

Excellent advice about reflashing.
