Black Soot

Cyrrently have a 64plate 1.6tdi Octavia, took the engine cover off today and best way I can describe it is at the front of the engine there's a silver square box with various pipes going into it,where that box marries upto the engine block area there's a solder line...well along there theirs black soot and some around the sides as well..

Is that normal and what is it?
