Octavia II (1.8 TSI) stuck in 4th gear

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My Octavia II TSI has got stuck in 4th gear, there is a lot of play in the gear stick in the front & back direction, however it's not moving side to side. Clutch seems fine.
This happened while driving on the highway, luckily I was able to limp back home 150+ kms by slipping the clutch in few places. Could get the clucth burning smell twice.
Car has run only 22,xxxkms(serviced 3 months back)

One interesting incident that happened a night before was that my bro in law tried to reverse the car while I was asleep but gave up as he couldn't engage reverse(he didn't depress the stick)
Could this have damaged the shifter/spring etc?

Any help would be appreciated as I fear I'd be fleeced by dealers. I'm located in India by the way, where the dealers have a horrendous rep.

regards,

FB

I would check the linkage at the gearbox end as there are two cables that make up the linkage and one may have an issue.

22k km should be still warranty.  just take it back and get them to fix it.

Otherwise, remove the air filter box & disconnect the selector cable for the side/side part & check if the gear lever now moves - if so it's a gearbox issue.

What a great find that video is.

Solved after replacing the shift lever, cost about 50 Pounds. Luckily it wasn't a gear box issue.

I'm guessing your brother-in-law didn't realise that he had to push the gear lever down before trying to select reverse and damaged the mechanism?

hey Silver, I hope that's the case too. However the skoda guys couldn't confirm it(whether my bil could have had a hand) but they did point out that it was a first for them too!
