Thinking about gearbox options!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I changed my gearbox a little while back after having synchro problems. However the box i changed to have the usual 5th gear whine, been driving it for 20k miles and it has got no worse! Anyways I am weighing up my options and wanted opinions please;

1) Get this box reconditioned and spend time off the road

2) Buy a used box

3) Buy an already reconditioned box

4) Ignore it and carry on

5) Attempt the 'bodge' repair that I have seen some reference too (bearing repair with box in situ)

6) Any other options...

ignore till it breaks or if you got plenty of money replace it i find reconned boxes don't last imo buy a low mileage second hand box

Do you really want to spend the money on a box when the only thing wrong with your's in the whine.  Mine's been winning for 30+k but only when coasting, never when i accelerate so it doesn't bother me in the slightest and its never caused me any problems what so ever.

That's exactly the same as mine. I'm only thinking about it in case I'm in the position where i can sell it to move onto something else, no one will buy it with a whine

what gearbox got the longest gear ratio and will my diff fit straight in?
