Another Aircon Story

Featured Replies

Hi guys. I have bought 56 reg Octavia about 1.5 year ago from one of main dealers with 1 years warranty. About 6 months later my aircon packed in so i have taken it to another main dealer closer to me to get it sorted out. So they have done service, re gassed and £80 ish quit later i was good to go. Then a week later same problem, quiet hissing noise and no cold air. Took it back and was told that for some bizzare reason there was a pressure but no gas, OK sorted FOC. Then about 3 weeks later same symptoms, back in the garage and this time was told that there is no gas again. So they re gassed, filled with the dye and i was good to go. Month later same problem, then dealers said that this time they changing a compressor, all work is being carried FOC.

So cut the long story short the problem still persists. It didnt help changing the compressor. Dealers dont know whats wrong as they cant find any dye anywhere. I have been in this dealership so many time that i have lost the count. Last thing they have suggested was to change the condenser or pipes going to it, but this time i would have to pay myself. I have spoken to SUK and they have said that due to the age of the car they cant help with anything.

So what are your views? Has anyone had any similar experience with it. Is it really SUK cant do or they dont want to do even that the problem hasnt been fixed while my car was in the warranty period?

Shall just bite the bullet and try to survive couple more summers without it as i dont see the point spending more money on it?

Thanks in advance

This sounds like a job for the professionals!  So, I'd suggest either getting a proper auto A/C to visit you or you take car to one based in a building. Tell them the full story and they will use a sniffer etc to trace the leak site(s).

this may be rubbish, but is there not some type of valve/restrictor that can go wrong? And cause this type of problem.

John

If they can't see any dye, its probably leaking in the unit behind the dash, which takes a lot of getting at.

As you're in Leeds, try Sultas Auto next to the Vue cinema, they're a VAG and aircon specialist and have sorted a number of cars for me and family.

The car is 6 months into a Skoda approved used car 12 month warranty.

And Skoda UK have said that "due to the age of the car" they can't do anymore to help?

I commend you for keeping your cool, I would be fuming if that was their official response. Regardless of the age of the car it is covered under warranty.

Tell them that unless they are able to fix the problem they can have the car back and you'll have your money back.

As others have mentioned get, if Skoda admit to being clueless then get them to pay for a proper A/C specialist to properly diagnose the fault if their franchised dealer clearly can't.

Thanks guys! Silver1011, problems started about a year ago, when my car was 6 months into warranty. Now its expired and i didnt want to spend 500 quid for it. I was fuming but just tired now of this incompetence of skoda mechanics and crappy SUK service. Shame it doesnt match the quality of their cars.

I love Skoda and thinking about getting newer in years time.

Huskoda, thanks for advise about Sultas. I have their details saved already, i will be going there for the service.

Maybe anyone knows any decent garages in Harrogate. It would be more convenient as i am working there? Thanks

Harrogate? Brookroyd Garage, they're an ex Skoda dealer who went independant. Used them a number of times and service has been good.

It'll be the condenser, it always is, it's a well known weakness. I'd be fighting very hard to get them to replace it under warranty.

I'd just like to add before someone says you can't get a condenser changed under warranty, I have had one done (except it was on a Kia), but then I have mesh behind the grille to protect it from stone damage, so they couldn't use that excuse.

I doubt that they would agree to change the condenser. They will argue saying that first full the car is already out of warranty even the problem hasnt been repaired while it was. Secondly they will be saying that they have done some repairs i.e. replaced the compressor etc.

I am still thinking about getting in touch with trading standards to see what they have got to say about it.

Sorry your first post is slightly confusing, did the aircon problems start 6 months after you bought the car or 6 months after the warranty ran out?

If you reported the issue while the car was still in warranty and it's still not fixed even though the car is now out of warranty you'd have a very strong case for it to still be their responsibility to rectify it FOC.

Agree issue raised within warrenty should be covered, the only issue should be how they are going to compensate you for thier failure to resolve the issue in a satisfactory time.

Sorry chr1staylor, yes the problem started 6 months after i have bought the car and it was still in the warranty period.

The issue hasnt been solved and SUK kindly have put that down to the age of the car and the problems occur. That was most ridiculous excuse i have evere heard.

That is SUK and the dealer's problem, not yours. They should be fixing this for free and they will try their hardest to avoid that so stand your ground.
