Facelift VRS electrical gremlins

Featured Replies

I've been having a few issues with my VRS the last few weeks. It started when the car wouldn't lock or unlock from the fob which I put down to a flat battery but after changing the battery and trying the spare key, the issue persisted. When unlocking using the key, the alarm does not beep but beeps most of the time when locking. Up til now it would beep every time when locking or unlocking.

I then noticed that the head unit would no longer turn on and off with the engine and also the sidelights would stay on after the key was removed where they did not previously.

I initially thought the locking issues may have been related to something inside the door so took it apart and noticed a fair amount of verdegris around the door control module pins. I cleaned this up but the same issues persisted.

I then got a hold of VCDS which showed two faults. An intermittent fault with the drivers door light which i discovered was due to a wire being knocked out when putting the door back together and also an intermittent fault with the alarm sounder.

I tested the sounder in VCDS and it makes a noise every time so cleared the faults to see if they would reappear which they have not.

I also checked whether the key signal was being received and everything seems to look fine in VCDS with both keys and all button presses recognised perfectly.

Has anyone had any similar issues previously? I'm trying to avoid taking it to a dealer if I can as I assume with no fault codes showing they may just start swapping anything related to these systems and charging me for the privelage...

My full VCDS scan is below however this is after clearing the two faults which appear to be fixed now.

So I tried removing the central electrics module to check for any sign of water ingress etc. Everything looked fine so I cleaned the connections and put it back together with no success.

Is this the correct module to control these parts and if so would it be worthwhile picking up a second hand unit to try?

I have read of weird electrical issues being caused by the battery starting to lose performance. We had an ABS warning coming up intermittantly and had it checked out a couple of times by the dealer but they said there was nothing wrong. I got a Bosch S5 096 battery and fitted it. It is more powerful that the standard battery that came with the car. The ABS error has never reappeared. Might be worth trying another battery.

  • Author

Thanks, I'll give it a go. Ordered the same battery for £88.74 from ECP.

I would have thought I'd have trouble starting the car if it was the battery so hadn't considered it as an option until now. AFAIK the car is still on its original battery so probably due a change soon anyway

If your really stuggling mate there is a garage in Orbison St motherwell local to you called bedrock vw I used to use him when I had my Leon cupra r he is very knowledgeable about all things vag and very helpfull if it's another opinion your after.

  • Author

So I fitted the new battery last weekend and..... nothing :( Everything is exactly the same as before.

I've heard good things about bedrock but quite enjoy fixing it myself if I can so it will be a last resort.

Could it be something related to the ignition switch? the lights and radio staying on seem as if the car doesn't know the key has been removed but doesn't explain the central locking issue.

My only other idea would be to replace the BCM as surely several unrelated electrical issues could be caused by the part which controls most of the electronics?

I've seen this on ebay which is cheaper than a dealer: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BCM-Onboard-power-supply-unit-Octavia-Superb-Yeti-1K0937087P-New-genuine-part-/171380214822

My issue with this is that my part number ends in J whereas this is P. Is this likely to be an issue? I can recode with VCDS but that only works if the part itself is compatible..

I would personally check to make sure you dont have any footwell or boot water ingress....these things normally lead to such gremlins as a number of the electrical controllers are located in the passenger compartment floor and in the boot.

Does the car steam up an unusual amount as thats often a sign there is a problem. Check the spare wheel well as well, if a problem it will be full of water.

  • Author

No water ingress at all as far as I can see. It was one of the first things I checked because my last car suffered from it badly to the point I had to use a carpet cleaner to remove it every few weeks.

There is some slight steaming up in the mornings at the moment but I put that down to the cold weather and wet feet more than any leaks.

I've had a reply from the seller of the BCM on eBay saying it is a direct replacement and offering a bit of a discount too but want to rule out other possibilities first.

Are there any other controllers on the car which control the sensing of the ignition being off, central locking, lights and radio? It all seems too unrelated to be a wiring fault or a single other point of failure
