wrapping grille

Featured Replies

What carbon fibre wrap to buy and what size is best to buy?

3M, 3D (gives full carbon effect) and easiest way is get a metre length, there's lots of choice on e bay. Make sure it's bubble free too, the sticky side has veins which allow air to escape. Some feels more workable than others, I got my last lot from a signs place (on ebay - can find the link if you like) and it felt a wee bit easier than previous. This was a bonus for interior, for grill however it's less of an issue because of the longer more gradual curves. From a metre roll you'll probably have enough (just) for a 2nd attempt or to do the centre console! Badges available on e bay too.

OK thanks. If u could send us the link that would be great. I used carbon wrap on a previous car but wasn't bubble free. Not the easiest stuff to use that's why I wanted to see what other people use. Any tips for doing the grill?

This is the stuff I used recently

the 1000mm x 500mm should see you right, double check grill height, be handy to have enough for 2 attempts just in case, plus enough for extra bits.

Tips:

Get the grill off with body panel surround (about 8 Torx screws I think)

Dunk it in a very hot bath to soften the catches

Carefully work catches open, once you've done a couple the rest are much easier

Once the grill surround that you're wrapping is out and you want the badge off, hot bath again and a hairdryer to soften the glue.  You may need to prise a little with a flathead with some card underneath, but it should basically peel off.

Cut out your section leaving plenty of overhang, the more you leave the less likely you are to have creases on the outside curves as you warm and stretch.

Don't overheat with hairdryer, wrap has an optimal temperature, if you heat too much it can go hard and brittle.

Always warm and stretch a bit at a time, for inner corners warm and press into corner with thumb, bit by bit.  I cut slits into the centre section to give it some slack but be careful, if you overdo the pressing in these slits could run up to the edge and you can get splits in your work.

That's basically it, warm the badge section and press the crease in round the circle.  Note badges are front specific and have a slight curve, however I didn't know this so my replacement is flat, but to be honest you can't tell, only a very slight gap bottom edge.

You'll need a good blade, and I got one of the purpose made 'squeegies' with cloth on one edge so it doesn't scratch if you need to work bubbles out or press into edges.

Hope this helps, hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, wasn't sure how much info you needed!  Enjoy!

That's great info mate. Thanks for taking the time to type it up.

No worries, I would have done a how to with pics, but at the time it was the 1st thing I wrapped so I was more concerned with getting it right. Another thing I will say is that as you warm and stretch the outer corners if you've left plenty of overhang any creases should end up away from the grille so when you trim it they'll be gone. I was fearing doing it a little bit but the grille surround is a nice piece to work with.

Oh, and there are 2 plastic pegs on the rear of the badge that need to be drilled out if you're taking it off!
