  • Good news! The car is back together and running as it should!! Just waiting for a couple of clips and should be good to go tomorrow! Dreading the bill!

  • Picked it up this afternoon. YAY its working! It's an absolute hoot to drive. I've been and given it a proper good jet wash just so I could see the paintwork/body a bit better as it was pretty grubby.

  • Finally...a picture!!

Ah decent, had the optima as a rental car in the USA, 2.5 Petrol GDI engine with six speed manual, really nice space to be in and a cracking engine. Not quite a open top Mustang/Camaro for the Big Sur but none the less we were doing quite big distances and was good on fuel and comfortable. It was in black and bog standard spec, didn't have the DRLS or anything like that.

Its a shame we only get the 1.7 diesel over here with 134bhp but it will do. The spec is incredible and my previous ceed was reliable. The 7 year warranty is a massive point for me as I rely on my car a lot.

The ceed had a few things that went wrong but the dealer was quick to sort them throughout my 3 year ownership and not once was there an argument.

The S-Max has had problems and even though under warranty I had to fight to get things resolved with no cost to me. It was a aftermarket warranty provided by a ford main dealer so not the same as the kia one but even so..it was a pain.

The optima gives me up to 7 years worry free motoring hopefully. Looking forward to 10am Friday!

What a car. Only driven about 6 miles and it's just wow. Never had a car as new as this..thoroughly love it!

Glad you like it, what is the 1.7 engine like?

Spot on, sounds like you are pleased.

Shame they never did an estate version but will they in the future..................... have a look in the Geneva Motor Show thread!

The 1.7 is surprisingly good. Not the last word in speed otlr quietness but certainly better than the 2.0tdci in my S-Max. Its economical too.

A lot of the press have said the 1.7 dosent have enough in gear acceleration but I've not had a any trouble with it.

I seen the estate thing from Geneva. I don't like them although I'm sure it would sell.

The optima would do well if they stuck the 1.6 turbo from the Cee'd GT in it!

So, I've had the car nearly 24 hours. First impressions:-

-It looks gorgeous.

-It has a decent amount of poke

-Its white

-Infinity stereo is very good, even at high volume

-parallel park system is a neat trick.

-lane keep assist, warns you you've drifted across the white line and corrects the steering. Quite cool.

-very comfortable - especially with the heated/cooled seats

-suspension is a bit soft..needs firming up. Need to look into it. Fine on a long A road, but throw it into a roundabout and it is too soft. My S-Max was better.

-rear windows need tinting

Overall I love it. Pictures to follow.

The wife has seen it, been in it, likes it. Her words..possibly the best car choice you've ever made...

Well..looks like I might have done something right for a change :-)

get some pics up, would be interesting to see the difference between the US model and the UK Model

Wish SWMBO would say that when I bring a new car home...

It's that the Kia or the Copen?

Sorry, that was the optima. The copen is still in hiding!

Optima 1

  • 2 weeks later...

So I've had the Optima a couple of weeks now. I love it. Its comfortable, packed with kit and even the 1.7 diesel is decent and is perfectly acceptable for the driving I do.

Its the first car I've had with a DPF and I hate that. The regen kills fuel economy. I'm also not keen on the brakes, so need to look at upgrades for them.

It could do with being a bit firmer in the corners, but I don't want to lower it as its low enough as it is.

I really really love it and would recommend one to anyone. But please don't buy one, because I like the exclusivity it brings :-)

As for the copen, its up for sale as I am not using it since getting the Optima.

It had the same effect on me when out in USA, it is a car that grows on you,  it is a shame that they don't do the Petrol engine over here as it was quite economical for a 2.5.

Also tuning wise http://www.andysautosport.com/auto_parts/kia_optima/2014.html, quite a lot you can do, may need importing though.

  • Author

There's loads I 'want' but it has to be imported and that's not cheap. I do wish Kia would put a decent petrol in it. The engine from the Cee'd GT would be good.

Thats a 1.6 turbo isn't it? Wondered why they didn't put the 2.2 out of the Sorento in would be quite a laid back car then-Kia have impressed me of late with their cars, friend has a slightly older shape Sportage and is a decent little 4x4 and has the split boot which I am a little bit obsessed with.

Had the optima a few weeks and I've found a fault. Its being sorted under warranty but basically the top of the rear windscreen isn't defrosting. The top 4 lines are not working. Not a major biggy but its a bit of a pain with the cold weather.

Love the exclusivity of the Optima too, however this morning I overtook one identical to mine and then past a 12 plate blue one and a 12 plate beige one. Its like an elite club though as both 12 plates flashed me and thumbed up :-)

Shame about the screen but at least warranty is sorting it. Glad you are enjoying, they've just released a face lifted Optima I believe.

How sad - imagine that, flashing and waving at similar cars to them, next you'll be saying there is forum for owners like that..................oh..........hang on.................

Mine is the facelifted version. There is an "all new" Optima being revealed in the next few months though. They might even put some proper engines in it too!

That was it - all new one, New York Motor Show reveal.

So, the windscreen saga turned out to be a non existent fault. Had a new back window only for it to be exactly the same. The dealer was all for trying another but I was convinced that it was unlikely to get 2 failures. A bit of research and it turns out its a standard thing. The top "elements" on my model Optima are in fact for the radio aerial as the sharkfin houses the GPS and phone stuff. Shame the dealers (or kia warranty department) were aware as it would have saved some effort!

Still hating the DPF as it kills the economy during a regen.

Other than that its great. Got a few plans for it :-)
