How can i raise the underside of my bumper so it dont catch on speed bumps..

Featured Replies

Hi, my front bumper hangs down really low it catches on everything.. obviously my car is lowered one side is tie clipped up but the other side still hangs low.. it dont have any screws or anything underneath i believe it was meant to be straight underneath but somehow mines hangs really low..

any ideas how i can fix this..

cheers

Have you got a piccy?

There's screws in the sides, under the bump strip, which hold the bumper to the chassis.  Some adjustment might be needed there.

Otherwise its a suspension raising job.

Ok, you need tx25s vag body trim/arch screws (ebay). And there should be holes up there somewhere. Could be worth undoing the pair of bolts under both ends of the rub strip and just making sure it's aligned ad mentioned above. May make lining it up with the holes you need for your screws easier. The centre section of the undertray should be there as well, is that still present? I suppose it's possible that if the bumper has been caught alot in the past the heads of the tx25 could have been knocked off if corroded, leaving the thread in there which is why it doesn't feel like there's holes present. Have a good look where the holes should be, push up the loose flap and see if anything appears in line.

Oh, that's the engine undertray, not the front bumper. :)

Yeah if it's the undertray flapping round there are slots in the bottom of the valence for it to push back into, tabs on tray should clip back in unless too damaged.

Well its lined fine as its done by myself when i fitted the slam and rad pack i got from u  dont seem to be any undertrays undermine the underside fo the bumper the yellow part on mine is what catches its defos not the undertrays and ive tried a few times over but dont have anything to screw into theres just a cable tie on one side that goes into a whole drilled into the underside of the slam panel

Pretty sure that section of the bumper had tx25s that screw into clips on the tray, so you need the tray for integrity of structure. Loads of tray centre sections on ebay and fitting kits (packs of screws with clips). Screw sets about £8 and centre tray £20+ if you're without the centre tray the side sections are lacking support. Are they still there?

That's decent news, centre undertray and fitting kit required, putting it on should solve your speed bump problem. Might be that it only pulls it up by a bit if it's been off for a while, but hopefully enough. Tray is useful for splash protection and airflow under car so needs putting back on. Side sections may fall down eventually as happened on my Seat after leaving my centre tray in a field.

is this the tray im needing buddy?

I believe so, some say for RS but look exactly the same. You'll find the undertray fitting kits there as well.

I have the same problem as the under tray has been taken off. I will get a pic to show you lot what he means as I just noticed it the other day while chatting to a mate after work. I was wondering why it hung lower

I had the same problem. I fixed it with some tie wraps. I had to drill some pilot holes through the bumper and in the under tray, but it worked a treat.

Yeah thing is the undertray has to be there for it to fasten to in the first place. The fitting kit (tx25s and clips) will leave a nice oem finish and it's always handy to have those screws and clips spare to replace corroded and lost ones.

Got to be worth a try, should be able to get some proper screws and clips off it too. The front splitter can be easily made to fit our bumpers so must be the right dimensions. Guess it's all about the tabs and screw holes but yeah, try it dude.

ohh thats good news, will whip it off and try it tonight..

It would be a right result, good luck

The bottom of mine scrapes some speed bumps, that's why I'm not 100% sure on a splitter yet as I thought it would make it worse. I don't have an under tray on mine either, maybe fitting one would help??

The undertray won't help too much, what sections are missing? Basically the structure is built with the 2 side pieces and centre and they tab onto it but to be honest I don't think they hold much weight, they also break on more than one occasion in their lifetime. There should be a few torx screws on the underside of the front valance in the centre which do more for keeping it up.

All that said I recommend you do fit the undertray and make sure it's complete with side sections. Helps airflow under car (economy) and the side sections protect engine bay and auxiliary belt from splashes and debris. You can get them on ebay, you tend to get what you pay for. I just replaced my side sections (put one on so far) and got the cheaper ones (22/pair) and had to re drill a couple of holes to fit and cut a section away round some charge pipework before pancake pipe. They don't often list 1.8t specific guards, just for octy mk1 in general.

Don't think mine has any parts of the under tray on, I found a set of 3 on eBay for £31 I think, also a fixing kit for about £8.

Well I didn't notice any covers when I changed my tip or downpipe

That's it the fitting kits are handy for £8. When you get under the car behind corner of wing/intercooler you'll see 2 threads that come down from a thin ledge, they're for the top of the side pieces and use the round things (god knows what they're called). As I said you'll probably need to cut out a section to go round a pipe on drivers side. You'll also see the hole near the sump where the rear leg gets screwed on. The other holes join centre section use clips and torx screws. Tab onto valance and that's it. Easiest to put sides on first. Be prepared to re drill holes I think the vrs front bumper shifts things a little, won't be out by much but probably enough to be a pain in the bum.

Save what you can of the fitting kit as those screws and clips are standard for some body trim and arch liners and such.
