What is this pipe (1.8tsi)

Featured Replies

Noticed the other day that my engine doesn't have this pipe fitted:

What is it and what does it do? - doesn't seem to affect the running of the car not having it but it's a worry if it should be there.

It's a breather pipe. Some are to the side some are under the cover.

It's one of the hoses from the PCV.  There's another from the PCV that runs into the turbo intake pipe (the big black one at the rear running Right to Left).

If somebody has fitted an aftermarket catch can it's very likely that the hose doesn't exist & the inlet to the manifold has been blocked off.

Can you post a pic of your engine?  Preferably with the plastic engine cover removed (they just lift off - do one corner at a time)

Ok went out to get a photo and I was slightly mistaken! The large pipe I highlighted in my original post is there, the one that seems to be missing is the smaller one below it:

On closer inspection I found where it looks like it might be supposed to go to:

I can't tell from the original photo if there is a pipe here or not - perhaps someone else with a 1.8tsi would be good enough to take a look?

Does this need a special part or would a generic length of pipe from a motor factors do the job here?

I too have been wondering what that short pipe is as it is open to air. Mine also has a yellow blob of paint on it as you can see below. I would say that it is normal as it is.

Well that's encouraging that yours is the same!

Funny about the blobs of yellow paint, mine has them all over the engine - must be some kind of marking applied at the factory for some reason - testing of components perhaps?

Mine isn't open to air, it's blanked off inside. If you stick a screwdriver in the hole it won't go right in.

Well what do you know - I was worried for nothing!

Thanks for everyone's' input!
