An also when reversing into a Parkin space on a hill it started rocking the car slightly in a forward backwards motion .and can sumtimes take 3 seconds to select reverse

When the car is running in Park is there a clattering noise?

Yes Phil, When started from cold only for a few seconds , and when u select drive or reverse a little knock

Sounds like it could be a worn Dual Mass Flywheel.

How many miles does the car have?

It has 85 on the clock phil , I was finkin that meself jst hopin its ntn to do with the gearbox , what do u recan the damage would be 4 a dual mass fly wheel?

It could well be.

It can be inspected by removing the starter motor. Shouldn't cost a garage much to do this- they will probably not charge you extra if you then get them to fit the flywheel for you.

There is just one DMF available for the DSG made by LUK. They also revised them in about 2008 so if you buy a new one it will be stronger than the original.

They cost around £270-£300 then budget at least £230-£270 labour costs as the whole gearbox has to be removed!

Oh another thing to check. I assume you had a DSG gearbox oil change 5k miles ago then?

To add to this it is vital that the new DMF is checked for excessive play before installing it, as I had one a few months ago, with more play in it that the old one which was removed.

Check the new one first against the old one, will save you a lot of time in the long run

However if a Garage fits the above for you, they should check this for you. LUK DMF's are not always perfect when delivered
