New VRS Owner

Featured Replies

Just took the plunge on buying a 62 plate Estate VRS, trading my monte for it, I've spoken to skoda about its warranty past, new clutch pack and 4 new tyres last year but nothing was mentioned on any engine issues which seems promising, am i right in thinking a late 2012 CAVE engine would be one of the last ones?

Also i've tried to find a post (I remember reading it sometime last year) on how its best to check the oil level in the car? i know its not as simple as just checking it cold as i only have till september then the skoda warranty runs out and i want to make sure the engine isn't drinking oil before it becomes my expense.

Welcome, and enjoy your car, the estates are the best, and less than 700 in the country! a true rare car ;) should be CAVE , doesn't mean its bad, my cave used NO oil, and my CTHE uses about a litre every 4,000 miles....

here's mine ;) (check out phantom in the projects section!)

oh and cannock? come to the west midlands meets! lol... I will be at the one on the 21st :)

Sharkrider, your hardly west mids? Thought you lived in cumbria?

Welcome Raymundo!! With respect to oil, soemone will be along shortly with the full 'low down' but this is how I do mine... go for a run out or commute etc, getting oil up to 90degrees then lark up on a level surface, wait ten minutes then check. Mine shows between 3/4's and to just touching the orange blob. All is well :) handy to knowwhere that shows when cold aswell so you can dip it cold

^^not very good at spelling when halfway through a 48 hour shift obviously!

I do :) but my good friends who organise the west midlands meet every month live in tamworth, and me and my box of wine live at their house when I'm not at mine ;)

I grew up in Tamworth! Only live up the road from there. I want to come to a meet. Will Hopefully get the chance soon :-)

Congrats on the purchase, I'm sure you will enjoy it! Estates rule :-)

Brill this is the simplest explanation i've seen, cheers :)

The whole reason for purchasing a new car was getting an estate, convinced the mrs i should get the better engine at the same time, I did go to my local skoda dealer to try and get a new one, but there was only one hatchback left in the entire country :(

Ill look up the west midlands meet details once i've got the car next weekend. which i cant wait for now.

Welcome to the forum, and enjoy the car.

The important thing about checking oil is not how others do it,

but that you do it the same way.

You need to check now as the car was delivered to you were the Oil is checked Cold & Checked Hot.

Then you know if it changes when you check again cold and hot.

So cold is stone cold with the car on the flat.

Hot is after you have had the oil up above 80 *oC, so that is going to be when it has been on a run.

Personally i do not wait 10 minutes,

5 is enough, Skoda Says 'a few minutes' in the Owners Manual.

But 5, 10 or even 15 minutes, do it the same way, then do not overfil with oil.

Check when Cold and do not overfill with oil.  Just see if any oil does get used, and be aware how much it uses by checking with cold dips.

Hopefully no oil useage.

So has the Car had the DSG Service Campaign work done if required before you got the car.

Heated Seat Service Campaign if required.

& be sure any warranty work is done or started before the Warranty Expires,

So Badges Replaced, wheels if there is corrosion, and any other stuff Skoda needs to foot the bill on.

?

Did you get any Warranty with the Car other than the remainder of the Manufacturers Warranty,

or are you going to consider buying an Extended Warranty?

Hi George,

i'm buying it from a car supermarket, they give me a 3 month 3k mile warranty, i've got skoda's warranty until september which will be more than enough time to report anything, things like the wheel nut covers and the centre badges already have corrosion on them so im going to get those sorted,

I have been considering extending it to 5 years but i've been unable to find any information or prices on skodas extended warranties, and skoda customer services basically told me i would have to buy a 3rd party one (even from skoda dealers) as i'm not the original owner.

Unsure if its had the DSG service campaign work done, i would of thought this would of been done when either the clutch was replaced or its last dealer service in september?

Do not assume it was done just because Clutch Packs were, (When were they done ?)

call Skoda UK Customer Services and check if the DSG Service Campaign Field action was required and carried out.

The Service Campaign started May 2014.  Look in the Service Book and see, or there should be a Sticker in the Spare Wheel Well.

Synthetic Oil Changed to Mineral & DSG Software Update, and Stickers.

As to the Extended Warranty,

a 'Skoda Approved Extended Warranty' provided cover is from Car Care Plan ltd, for 2 years will be about £550 (£547) or £399 for 1 Year.

If the Car has Full Service History, that should be available in September.

Haggle maybe, Skoda Dealership or from Skoda UK CS, or even check out Car Care Plan ltd.

Talk to a Skoda Dealership or Skoda UK CS about having the Badges Replaced.

Common problem, and if they are the original badges on, they should not argue.

?

So service History.

How many Miles.

Service Schedule on Spark Plugs is 40,000 mile, they might be done early,

or you might want them done early.

Brake Fluid change if not already done is at 3 years, then each 2 years.

PS

OEM Wheel nut covers are Plastic.

They might not replace the Wheel Centre Covers under Warranty.

What wheels are on the car,?  *Gigaro*, but are they Black, Silver, White or Dark Chrome?

Dark Chrome get White Spider Corrosion more commonly.

Worth getting the Wheels off, check they come off OK, and put some Copper Slip on the Faces that touch.

Its a 62 Plate Registered sept 2012 -

11433 miles on the clock and has a full dealer service history, was originally a loan car for a bentley dealership and then sold to someone after so has 2 previous owners, the clutch according to skoda cs was done in april 2014 so unless it was done at its last service sept 2014 im going to now assume it hasn't been done, im not sure if its been ran on 95 or 98 ron fuel,

What does the DSG campaign ecu update actually do to how it works? also what's the sticker look like so i can look for this when i pick it up?

With regards to the badges it has the older style green ones, my monte had the new style which i do like more, so i may end up just buying the badges and changing them over.

Looks good, stealth.

Since Alasdair Stewart Brand Director Skoda UK worked in a senior position for Bentley & VW own Bentley surely Skoda UK will see all is well for you if any issues in the future.

(Sales, Marketing & After Sales Bentley)

Up to you if you have the Service Campaign done on the DSG.

If it runs OK i would not bother.

If Skoda / VW UK never made sure it was done, and they are not telling you it needs doing,

they are responsible into the future,  'No Recall', must mean 'Not Safety Critical', surely.

Spark Plugs should be fine,

& as to 98 RON, there is none sold in the UK, so it would be Tesco Momentum 99 or Shell V-Power Nitro you can use now if you want.
