Piston-valve interface...

Featured Replies

Right, the f**k-up truck is in pieces again :dull: . Basicly the aux. belt snapped on the truck while I was on the motorway, as I was only 1/2 a mile away from the services I just carried on, as I pulled into the car park the engine died and wouldnt start/turn over. It's an MTDI conversion so I knew it hadnt run out of electrickery.

RAC man was kind enough to get me a new aux belt on his way out to me (well, he had to do something in the 1 1/2 hours I waited...) but even with jump leads the engine refused to turn over? Another 1 1/2 hours wait for a low-loader...

Long story short the frayed bits of belt had wound around the back of the crank pulley, wore through the casing, and got between the timing belt and sprocket. Result? jumped timing belt and at least one bent valve, I'll know more once I've stripped the head back a bit more (its already on the bench).

Anybody got any good pictures of fitting a new belt? I've done it before on other cars but could do with a pic of the bottom/crank timing marks.

While I'm in there the plan is to re-set the static timing on the 300tdi pump (bosch timing tool http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/US-PRO-VW-3-IN-1-BOSCH-VE-INJECTION-PUMP-TIMING-TOOL-US3178-/301520131843?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4634001703 on order). Any ideas what value to aim for? I've seen 1.54mm lift bandied about but I'm open to suggestions. It has the 2 piece adjustable pulley wheel.

Cheers all,

Rich.
