brake problem

Featured Replies

my problem started on thursday my rear passegner  side caliper heated up the wheel and saw some smoke. went to mechic he losened the hand brake cable and was working fine and then yesterday the other side at the rear driver side heated up. please  can you help with this problem. does the calipers need replacing or the brake cable or any other parts please help

I've never heard of this one before, but it sounds a bit like the handbrake is over-tightening. Are you in the habit of applying it with your foot hard on the footbrake? If so, try easing off the footbrake until it is just holding the car.

so do you think its the cable that is the problem ? or the calipers may need replacing

Could be sticky calipers but I'm not sure why cable adjustment would solve the problem. When mines left overnight with handbrake on the pads are always slightly bonded but do free up as soon as I pull off. My discs need replacing though and that surface corrosion that you get can be a bit sticky. My calipers don't bind though. I did read on a vw forum they'd cured similar problems to you with new handbrake cable because it just wasn't allowing pads to release. Is handbrake slack when it is off? I would have thought it's cable or calipers, sticky calipers probably more common but also expensive. Apparently you can service them and clean them up, I've never done it though, could try that first (cheapest), closer exam of them may tell you. Could be cable though as both sides going at same time is probably unusual. Not sure if that helped much? Sorry

I'm heading for the idea that the cables may be fraying and holding the HB on a bit. In which case the only cure is new HB cables.

I had a dodgy cable cause a similar problem on my mkII. A new cable solved the problem. The inner lining had disintegrated and was causing the cable to jam making the calliper stick on.

Sounds plausible especially as adjustment made a difference for a while and it's effecting both calipers.
