ICE: Benefits and cons - Shall I bother refitting?

Featured Replies

Starting to question whether I should bother refitting all my ICE? I have all the following currently out my car

Pioneer DEH8400-MP - repairing at ICE dealer

US Amps - Merlin Amp - The dog's danglies! Not even tried it yet. :(

Pair of JL 12W3s - serious bit of subwoofer. Not heard properly due to not having installed the above MONSTER amp.

Kenwood KAC7201 - decent enough amp to power my door components (currently being driven by a Skoda tape deck  )

Custom built false floor to fit in boot perfect - keeps subs up higher, and houses amps underneath quite happily.

Lots of wiring

Is it me or is my ICE not as important to me now? I'm starting to see my sub box and amps as just extra kilograms for the cars gross weight, and I see them as a performance hindering lump, than something to produce some excellent sounds. I also see the lump as some serious dosh - Must be at least

Sell it.

ICE weighs a lot.

However, if you let it melt it'll drain out and save you weight again.

really depends on what your after from your car. do you want to save every kg in order to have a bit more speed and extra handling ability? or do you want to enjoy good quality sounds when driving? or even a comination of both.

you could always simplify what you have fitted. if it was me i would keep some form of ICE. all i have in mine is a RF 3001 amp and stage 3 sub. the rest is standard. makes a great difference and tbh the negative effects of the extra weight doesnt bother me, how much of a difference is 10kg going to really make :)

your call jason :)

Why not just get rid of some of the ice.

I've gone back to the oem cd player as I was fed up with the kenwood problems. Think the std ones good when used with an external amp. Going to put the std front speakers back in as one of the jbl's tweeters are fooked and the mids stick out too far as they are hitting the door cards. Also fitted the amps to the back of the seats instead of the spare wheel bay. That way I get a spare wheel back.

So in all I'll be left with two amps. one for the front std speaker and one for the sub. Why didn't I just do that in the first place

How much time do you spend in the car?

If it's your everyday drive a nice bit of ICE can make a big difference.

Simplify things.

A single sub and some decent speakers makes a lot of difference to enjoying the car , and if you refit that just before you get the remap you won't notice any of the weight

Buy an estate and some umpaloompas.

Then you can have live music wherever you go.

:rofl::D

Well, think what I'll do then is sell what I have for now, and just get a single sub - I could use the Kenwood to power that OK. Right, will see what revenue I can raise from the ICE then - Anyone fancies this Merlin Amp, give me a shout for details about it, before it goes on fleabay. Hoping it will sell well as its an imported serious bit of kit. Only done 6 hours showtime before being passed on to me.

Keep it simple, it's the way to go. A decent HU, some decent speakers and (you've guessed it) a decent active sub so there is no messing about with external amps and the like.

Shove the sub into one corner of the boot and you still have loads of room and the overall weight gain wont be too costly, say 30KG's max?.

Is it really necessary to have ICE that can be heard in neighbouring counties? As long as it sounds good INSIDE the car you are sorted:thumbup:

But I have to say that amp you have looks the dogs!

....extra weight = slower car... simple!

And if you go on a crash diet you can offset some of the extra weight of the ICE!

Please don't mention the word "crash" in my presence - even in a different context! ;)

Right - ad placed on talkaudio, and kind of in this thread - Also have a single JL 12W3 up for grabs - My aim will be to find a 12" box for the remaining JL 12W3 because it is a cracking sub, and power it bridged using the Kenwood, which is adequate to drive it. This also means I only need to find a new sub box, not a new sub & amp.

Gutted to have to move on the Merlin though. It had so much promise - supposed to be loads better than even the reknowned JL 1000/1

Whoops! :o

Apologies to that man!
