vrs a classic ?

Featured Replies

just been watching Quentin willsons excellent classic car show on C5 and thought maybe one day the fabia vrs may join the ranks of a classic car. What do you think.

Depends if people with the current health concerns over diesels think a classic can pump out all kinds of black stinky stuff.

Think it'll always have a cult following....not sure on the classic status tbh

I remember this argument before and i believe the overall opinion was that it isnt unique or iconic enough to be a classic.

I suppose only time will tell, but it wasnt the first so called diesel hot hatch, it definately was the only diesel hot hatch and i wouldnt class it as the best looking.

Where as seat are sporty, vw is for quality and audi is comfort/luxury, i think skoda tried to make the vrs a little bit of all those at a good price and then marketed the crap out of it.

Its a case of stop people in the street and ask if they heard of a ibiza cupra or ibiza fr, then ask the same people if they heard of a fabia vrs.

I think a 100% standard, low mileage SE VRS will be worth good money for a long time.

Er no, great car but there's nothing that makes it a classic imo. I've had a Clio Williams and an integra type r. They have something in them that the Fabia dose not. The both have there own character and drive very well giving you excitement each time your in the car. Having said that a low milage original in say another 10 years could hold a decent amount but I'd rather have one of the other two in the garage for keeps.

I dont think so...

Only mk1 that will probably be worth any money would be a standard low mileage SE and even then it would have to be a special number... Something like 001.... 007

No

As said - perfect condition low mileage standard SE will hold it's price but I don't think it would be considered a classic. Compared to the likes of a 205Gti , Austin Mini, Mk1 Escort etc.

JRJG

Wouldn't say it's a classic or will be a classic in the future but it will probably have some sort of following.

A car needs to have that special something about it and be iconic to be a true classic in my eyes. The Honda Integra Type R DC2, Civic Type R EK9, Ford Escort Cosworth, Peugeot 205GTi, and the Renault Clio Williams would be on my list as hot hatch classics.

What really is a classic ? Its just such a generic term isn't it, don't worry about it and don't try and overanalyse what is and isn't.

I don't think people should try and force their opinion of what is and isn't classic, no more than you try and define what is and isn't a "cult" classic film

Its the same as the mini short lists above - none of the above really bother me personally and a lot of them I wouldn't call all of the above classics ! That doesn't mean they can't be though and there may be groups like Clio owners that beg to differ.

I'd agree it certainly ain't a classic yet. But in 2024 if there are Fabias still about I'd definitely say they were classic by then (but you might struggle to drive them due to emissions etc!

Your insurance will offer you classic insurance lets say once the age reaches a certain point. So I'd use that as a reasonable definition of what is classic.

"What's the definition of a classic car?

When it comes to stating what does and doesn't qualify as a classic car, there's no fixed definition which is accepted by all car insurers. For tax purposes, if you drive a car that is more than 20 years old and worth more than £15,000, this is classified as a “classic” by HM Revenue & Customs. However, given the lack of a fixed definition, it's always worth talking to the insurer before signing up to any deal. This will ensure you take out the right level of classic car insurance cover for your particular vehicle."

Taking that definition NONE of the cars above would generally be seen to be classic according to HMRC! (well you don't see many examples of such old cars selling that kind of amount anyway, maybe with a few rare and perfect exceptions but almost certainly going to exclude TypeR's,Clios and 205s lol but may include classic Minis, mk1 Fords and Cosworths perhaps.... ).

Each to their own isn't it. Everyone will have their own opinion and views on what is and isn't a classic to them. I think the OP was getting at will the vRS be a future cult/iconic classic not a classic as defined by HMR&C.

I wasn't trying to force my opinion on anyone, it is what it is, my opinion on what I consider to be cult/iconic/future classics. If you disagree then fair enough but I'm sure you have your own ideas on what you would consider to be classics.

The Integra and Civic won bucked loads of awards back in the day for the most powerful per litre output from a 1.8 and a 1.6 litre engine.
The 205 GTi and Clio Williams were iconic back in the 80s and 90s. You could also add the Fiesta XR3i to that list.

Any old fast fords especially Cosworths will always have a cult following.

I'm just not sure the vRS is that special, I guess only time will tell!

Fair enough, my response was in consensus to the general " it isn't a classic " verdict being cast.....

I just don't think its possible to make that judgement and its equally unclear on other models where opinion comes into it (Austin Allegro anyone?)

I think you made the best point on it when you said "in my eyes"....and " on your list " .....whilst others have made much more declarative verdicts on it being a classic or not. I just don't think its possible to make that call.

Best bet is to check if you can get classic insurance on it after X years and if so, yes its possible to be classic.

I think literally any car that has met the standard for insurance as a classic, still be running and looked after can be considered a classic IMO and takes all model snobbery out of it.

I wouldn't call an Austin a classic but the fact someones prepared to labour love and keep it running for that long automatically makes it a classic in my eyes.

Can't beat the Mk1 Fabia and Octavia VRS

They will become more and more difficult to get hold of in about 5 years time so may get a bit of a status for being a great car but wouldn't consider them classics

Hi,

Just to let you know that we have future classic car insurance schemes that could cater for this type of vehicle.

Regards,

Dan.
