Help! Steering Assistance needed.

Featured Replies

Following on from this thread...I'm now in a worse situation.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/344502-teves-espabs-pump/

Short version.

I unplugged the ABS sensor and took the battery out on Saturday to have a look at the cable going from the hub to the ABS/ESP pump.

I couldn't see anything untoward with the cable, so plugged everything back in assuming the ABS sensor is dead.

After restarting the car, I had orange PAS light up and stay on.

The car drove fairly normally, but the steering wasn't self centring normally.

I tried the full lock to lock reset, but it made no difference.

I scanned the car yesterday, and this is what was logged.

Looking at the logs, the steering angle was always showing as 0 no matter what I did with the wheel, but the steering acceleration was showing up normally.

Also shown was SteerAng n.Init in block 4, so I assumed that it had lost its setting.

We then ran through this reset procedure (I have ESP so the MK60 brakes)

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1J)_Brake_Electronics_(MK60)#Basic_Setting

Result.... Still 0 reading on angle at all times. Also SteerAng n.Init still showing on the 4th block.

Tried the full lock to lock procedure several times but still nothing.

The car still has PAS as I can move the wheel fairly easily when stationary. When moving very slowly, it feels like the assistance is reduced greatly and is really heavy.

When on the move the steering is quite heavy, but drivable.

Is this all related to my ABS sensor being down, or has my steering angle sensor also failed at the same time as reconnecting my battery?

I've been reading up on this even further Mike, and I don't think I can do anything about it until my duff ABS sensor is fixed.

I don't think I can do the reset procedure properly as the car doesn't know I'm driving straight ahead with one sensor permanently reading 0.

I think this is the critical part:

Notes:

  • If the 02546 - Steering Limit Stop 005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation fault will not clear after driving the vehicle and completing the VW Golf (1K) Steering Assist procedure:
    • Increase the time in-between key cycles to 30 seconds or more.
    • Check all Adaptation values in the #44-Steering Assist controller.
    • Verify all of the WSS (Wheel Speed Sensor) values are plausible in the 03-ABS controller! We received feedback from both Mk70 equipped and MK60 ESP equipped (1K) Golf models with 02546 and 00778 DTCs that would not clear due to a faulty WSS. Even if a WSS DTC is not stored it would be advised to log or graph MVB 001 while driving.
