Problem connecting laptop with ethernet

Featured Replies

Morning folks :)

I'm having a few issues connecting my laptop with the Ethernet cable, a wee while ago the speed dropped off when connected with the cable, was only 50mb instead of 100mb, I called the supplier who checked their end and said there was no issue. I used a replacement cable but still no joy. Recently the laptop wont connect using the cable at all now and only works off wifi. I've googled the issue but don't seem to get any real answers. I've done a diagnostic test when the cable is plugged in and it says there are no issues. Now its not the end of the world but would be better if sorted.

Cheers

What are you connecting to? A router I assume?

There are usually multiple ports on the back of the router you can try.

Have tried all the ports on the back of the router and have disabled the wifi when I try to see if it will connect with cable but no joy.

Tried a different cable?

I'd also suggest you either try a different laptop on your network or your laptop on another network. That'll let you isolate the problem.

Where does it report 50mb?  As usually a wired ethernet reports 10mb, 100mb or 1gb that doesn't usually change (unlike wifi).

It registers that if I do a speed test...sometimes its slightly higher and sometimes slightly lower. It used to read about 98mb give or take. At the mo I don't have access to another machine.

internet download speed? What does it say if you go into the network adapter settings and look at status - ( network and sharing centre, change adapter settings, right click ethernet adapter - Status).  #

10/100/1000Mb speeds for networks are theoreticals as well so if you do any sort of speed tests across them you won't ever reach those figures even though the adapter will say it's conencted at 10/100/1000.

I'll check that when I get home as machine is there and not in office.

The speed check always said about 100 down the cable (when it worked) then about 40ish over the wifi.

Check your Speed & Duplex for that interface within System Manager - It is set to Auto Neg?

Well when I got home after a few attempts it seemed to work, I had to disable the wifi. When I did a download speed test its only registering 28mb, it used to be 100mb...well that's what I pay for!!

I took these pics of the network settings.

Cheers
