Coolant temp up and down

Featured Replies

Over the weekend i noticed my temp gauge dipping up and down and on monday morning the gauge was erratic. Scanned with vcds showed code 17704-error in mapped cooling system-check temp sensor and thermostat. Since the temp sensor is a 5 minute job i replaced that yesterday to no avail. So today ive changed the thermostat and the plastic housing for the thermostat and the temp gauge is still up and down. Goes up when stationary and drops when moving or i turn on the heating. Water pump was changed in september 2014 4000 miles ago.

Over the weekend the car was a pita to start a few times and when it did start on those occasions its idle speed sat at 2000rpm.. Which led me to the CTS.

All parts ive used are genuine apart from the plastic thermostat housing/flange thingy

Any ideas?

Try another CTS in case the new one is duff?

You're not going to like this, but failed instrument panel stabiliser?

If you have access tio VAG COM what is the coolant sensor reading?

Oh no..............................where from?.

You may have over tightened the stat housing or not got the o ring seal seated correctly.

I think the seal might have gone on wrong and ive not realised. Its only a trickle but annoying none the less

  • 2 weeks later...

Does the housing have a seal on too? I dont remember taking one off but i no my new one came with one

No just the O ring with the thermostat

All sorted now.. What a faff. I had to use a seal for behind the thermostat and on the housing. When i did it a few weeks ago the weather turned bad mid way threw so i rushed it. I crushed the thermostat, crushed the seal and warped my cheapo housing.... Oops

Did the replacement stat fix the problem?

My mate has just bought a Seat Leon Cupra and got the EML on and the same fault code as this. Replaced the CTS with a genuine one, and cleared the code, but it keeps coming back and the gauge shows cold most of the time.

He's got it booked in for the cam belt, water pump and thermostat in the next week or so, but just wondering if the new stat will fix the problem.

It will be that if the gauge moves, usually will rise when standing and drop when driving

Yeah new stat has sorted it, gets up to temp within a mile now and stays solid at 90c
