Correct Suspension Parts for 1.9TDi Combi upgrade/standard for Towing

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I've gut a 1.9Tdi Ambient e Estate on a 56 plate.  It's done 180k miles and is still on the same shocks/springs, I occasionally tow a caravan and get the usual saggy back end.  Had a scary wobble last year on the way to Donnington (good be I was overloaded with beer).

1Z5  Variant ACBXE01 Version NFM5FM5A4009N

I've been looking to replace all 4 shocks and springs but am unsure of the correct parts.  I got some keen prices for KYB's but see differing part numbers and sizes for my car.

Excel-G shocks

Rear 344459

Front 334834  22/50mm dia

Front 335808 25/55mm dia

K-Flex Springs

RH6788 L=631 x D=113 x OD11.75 Rear

RH1713 L=346 x D=146 x OD 12.25 Front

RH6789 L=325 x D=111 x OD 12.5 Front

I would mind a heavy duty set up on the back for towing or perhaps some kind of spring assisters removable or permanent.

My local dealership won't tell me the correct parts (so they can get me to order through them no doubt)

Anyone

I would fit standerd springs and dampers and fit MAD helper springs on the rear.

1.9tdi is probably the 50mm strut - get under & measure it to make sure.  Use cheap verniers or an adjustable caliper or make a go/no go gauge out of some masonite / ply (cut a 51mm x 30mm section out of the side.

The Koni site is pretty good for working out which strut you need.

RH1713 should be the front

RH6788 & RH6789 are rear axle springs if the KYB parts finder is correct / looks again - yep you've made a mistake with the partnos & specs.

I'd give KYB a call & tell them what you are doing.  The RH6788 is a longer free length at 361mm but has thinner wire (11.75mm).  The RH6789 is 325mm but has thicker wire (12,5mm) so it might sit lower initially but possibly not compress as much when a load is put on.

/looks in downloadable catalogue... The 6788 is a std spring.  The 6789 is the Heavy Duty spring.

Did you bother to look at their website / cattledogs?  It's all there.  Bet if you looked at the downloadable cattledog it would specify the damper partno for your car - they look like they've got it sussed.
