Odd one..Too rich AND lean

Featured Replies

Did a scan on my MK1 Octavia VRS after having some lumpy idle/ juddering boost.

Quite pleased that only 5 codes came up in total for a 14 year old car! :p

HOWEVER...

Maybe because Im Irish...but Im confused by the following codes...

17545 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add)

            P1137 - 35-10 - System too Rich - Intermittent

17536 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult)

            P1128 - 35-10 - System too Lean - Intermittent

If its running too rich AND too lean, whats the real issue?

I also had...

16514 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1: Malfunction in Circuit

Could it be that errors 17545 and 17536 are caused by 16514, and by replacing Lambda sensor, all 3 will be beaten into submission?

Thanks Phil

It also came up with coolant temperature sensor faulty, so have ordered a new one. As its a common prob with VAG I figured I may as well as its bound to go at some stage.

Would replacing the coolant sensor perhaps eliminate the lambda error and by extension the others? Maybe it's a case of doing things one by one until the problems dissipate!

The heating circuit for the oxygen sensors lives under the floor on the drivers side, so I would think it is unlikely unless you have had a short for some reason.

Fuel trim (add) is at idle, Fuel trim (mult) is off idle at all other engine speeds
