Advice please - V70 D5 AWD to Superb 4x4 DSG?

Featured Replies

I want to change cars. Currently I am driving a 2006 V70 D5 AWD with 185BHP. The car is still in good shape but I have a couple of bugging issues.

The kids are getting bigger and the V70 does not have that much room in the back and boot. It feels quite cramped for a normal size adult. The fuel economy has never been good - known Volvo D5 issue - and it was my first automatic but it has an old fashioned "washing machine" torque converter 6 speed geartronic. I am not sure whether I want to carry on with automatics anymore.

And the turning circle despite some modifications I made is abysmal. I do the servicing myself and it is fairly easy to get to parts and fix bits. With the Volvo diagnostic programme you have the same information as the Volvo dealer.

It is a very comfortable and well equipped long distance runner.

I am considering a Superb Elegance or L&K and looked at a FWD DSG 170BHP just to see the car.

Has anyone moved from V70 D5 (AWD) to Superbs??? How does the Superb compare?

Are they easy to maintain at home. I guess you need a PC to read out fault codes and the ECM. Is this available to the DIYer?

Don't about servicing but the Superb will give you a lot more space for your growing children and will be cheaper to run my uncle has a Volvo and he is always complaining about really poor economy so much so he is getting rid and the car he is replacing it with a Superb Elegance 170hp estate !!.

Elegance or L&K you cannot go wrong even with the DSG your fuel consumption will still be better than the Volvo. You cannot go wrong obviously you will get unbiased opinions on here. Good luck.

I have moved from v70 FWD D5 Polestar (225HP/460 Nm) with manual gearbox.

Main differencies:

- v70 has so little space in the back comparing to its overall size. It was rather difficult to travel 4 adults for longer distances. Superb is a limo in that area.

- v70 steering is lifeless. Superb is much fun to drive, even considering significant power difference.

- v70 brakes are more sharp.

- v70 has bigger boot if to measure it from floor to ceiling.

- v70 consumption was 8.2 L / 100 km, Superb 7.2L in winter, 7.7L in summer

- Superb has very good front lights, addaptive

- Sound isolation is about the same

- v70 engine has better sound and less vibrations (5 cyl vs 4)

- DSG is matter of taste. It took time to get used to it.

Faults are very easy to diagnose with a vcds cable and software

But it will cost about £260 for a legitimate cable, the actual VCDS software is free as are updates.

Are you thinking about the new or current model? New model will be available in 190bhp/400nm guise versus current 170/350nm. I mention that as you're Volvo is generating 400nm of torque AFAIK so you might notice a bit less torque but maybe not too overly noticeable.

What size wheels are on your Volvo. The elegance and L&K will run 18s on a 40 profile so may impact ride quality.

You won't be disappointed with the spec on the Skoda however even versus a generously equipped Volvo.

Recently switched from an XC90 to SII Elegance 170 DSG 4x4.  Was also looking at a XC70.  Other than better seats and carpets in the Volvos, I did not see a lot to justify the marked difference in price.  Superb has more room, similar pace and both well equipped.  Getting about 40mpg with the Skoda which is a lot better than the D5 in the XC90.

We ran a v70 Se D5 back in '04, with the 5 speed auto.

It replaced a Mondeo Mk 3 which was a much better estate car, just with a little less "class".

We kept it for 9 months & 9k miles, & managed 36 mpg overall, not very good for a gently driven diesel, IMVHO.

Went back to 2 more Mondeo Wagons, & now run a Superb.

Not as much fun as the Fords, but quiet, comfortable, 35 mpg which is good for a 2.0 petrol / DSG & quite chuackable.

We test-drove a current V70 last year, & it seemed grumbly / noisy & boring to drive, & much less useful than a Superb wagon.

The Volvo has 225/45-17 and I hate them. I guess it is the low profile tyres which ruins the ride on scared road surface. I much prefer my winter tyres which are 205/55-16 or recently 215/55-16.

I do know that the Superb comes with 225/40-18 ..... Maybe there is a trend back to normal as the new Passat has gone down in size.

I do not know whether I have ever used the full 400NM of torque because I hate the instant consumption figure drop to minus, but it does pull o.k. when it needs to.
