mk2 vs mk3 1.4 tsi

Featured Replies

Hi all

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what's changed engine-wise between the 1.4 TSI models? As far as I can discern (from some limited online research), the engines are the same. Is it simply a lot of fiddling with the ECU that's increased performance and economy, or have they also made changes under the hood?

Cheers.

Completely different engine.  The new 1.4 TSI is part of the EA211 family.  Key differences with the new engine include:

  • Back to belt-driven cam, rather than chain-drive.
  • Exhaust manifold in the cylinder head to speed warm up
  • Aluminium block - lighter than old unit

Some good info on the new engine on http://blog.caranddriver.com/we-sample-the-ea211-volkswagen%E2%80%99s-next-global-four-cylinder-engine-series/

The current implementation in the Octavia does not feature the cylinder-deactivation that is used in Golf/Seat/Audi models.  Less efficiency - but also less to go wrong...

Thanks for the reply! I needed my curiosity satisfied, as it was driving me a little nuts.
