Wheel bearing failure at 24k ?

Featured Replies

Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed a grinding type noise from I think the front divers side wheel and was only really noticeable when going round right hand sweeping bends over a certain speed.

After doing a 300 mile round trip yesterday it is more noticeable all the time now.

Could it be bearing failure ? Car is a 63 plate and just done 24k!

Warranty job or am I looking at a bill myself ?

Thanks

Id say warranty first of all. Although a bearing is 'wear and tear'

I would push for warranty 2 years and 24k not fit for purpose, hell I had a tipo from new and sold at six years with 78 k and they were still fine, and yours is a lighter car

Thanks for the replys, I'm gonna whip the wheel off and see if anything visible is grinding before taking it in.

I'll be a bit ****ed if it's failed seen as my mk1 VRS was on 150k with original bearings!

I had a wheel bearing fail on my old mk2 at around 10,000 miles - to say I wasn't impressed was an understatement, was done under warranty though.

Get it booked in if it's a wheel bearing or any thing driveline related it's warranty any thing brake related maybe chargeable depending on the failure

Have a feel of the edges of your rear tyres, saw toothing on the tyres can sound like a knackered wheel bearing, I have seen this a few times on VAG cars, last one being a new Scirocco.

If it is a bearing I am sure warranty will sort this out for you.

I've had two go on mine but was running wider wheel last year. I dint bothered me as its a moving part, wear and tear. Fix it myself.

I'll have a good look at the tyre when I get the wheel off and post what I find if anything :/

Hi Richard, yes if it's a wheel bearing it's covered under warranty. But if you don't find anything wrong with the bearing you are about to examine, take a look at the opposite wheel. Front drive cars often transfer the noise to the opposite wheel, depending what stage of failure the bearing it at. But you may already know that. As said, tyres too can be a source of this type of noise so look carefully. It's not often a bearing fails but sometimes a bad one gets through. I bought a new Nissan Warrior 4X4 a few years back and it came from the factory with no oil in the rear diff and duff wheel bearings on the rear. It went ok for 400 miles before becoming noisy. Sometimes bearings miss getting the proper amount of grease or get through when it should have been a reject. These things unfortunately happen occasionally. It's a simple job and free!

Thanks for that info Estate Man, on quick inspection of the tyre the inside has no abnormal wear and I'm pretty confident it's not warped brake discs as there is no vibration of any kind when braking!

Certainly points to a goosed bearing :(
