Changing the Bolero head unit

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I have recently bought a Superb Hatch 170CR SE 12 plate from a Skoda dealer. Liking the car, come from a 56 plate Passat estate, and it's like a home from home. Do miss the cruise control on the Passat though, the display with either 1  or 5 MPH adjustment is great.

However, I have the Bolero head unit in the car. Seems OK but has no Bluetooth or Sat nav. Been looking on Ebay at replacement units and the all seem to come from China and are about £3/400. Items like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Latest-Android-8-Car-DVD-Player-GPS-E2-Radio-Stereo-Wifi-3G-for-VW-Volkswawgen-/201312629570?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Car+Make%3ASkoda%7CModel%3ASuperb&hash=item2edf2af342 The main thing that worries me is the facia. The head unit in the car has got a couple of controls in it as well as the passenger airbag warning light. Looks like this one http://img3.hyperinzerce.cz/x-cz/inz/5084/5084128-skoda-bolero-na-6cd-mp3-sd-novy-superb-1.jpg . Now I've heard bad things of disconnecting this light, generally requiring a visit to a dealer to reset it. How do you get arond this problem as the only videos online that I've seen don't have a car with this light on it.

Any ideas?

Guess not then. So I'm stuck with the unit that came with the car then.

I swapped the Bolero to a Columbus unit in my 2011 Superb.

You can pop the airbag light out of the bottom of the facia so it doesn't need to be disconnected and then it just fits into the new surround for the Columbus (as it is a different shape to the Bolero).

Just be careful when you pull the Bolero out that you don't pull the airbag light out at the same time.

I just made sure it wasn't pulled back into the dashboard when it was 'free' and connected it to the new facia for the Columbus.

If the third party ones are the same shape as the Columbus, it'll be the same process.

If all you want is to add BT to the Bolero then that will cost about £130, a couple of hours of your time to fit and a little coding with VCDS.

The next option would be an Amundsen+ unit with but in BT (look for a MAC address on the label that is not all zeros). That will be a straight swap (possible fascia change) and coding. About £450.

The top option is a Columbus, BT cabling & module and coding. This will need a new fascia. About £600 all in.

Gents,

Quick question, I have a Bolero in my 2011 Superb.

I have the chance to buy a second hand Amundsen+ from a 2012 Superb.

Does anyone know if this is plug and play?

Or will I need to buy a GPS antenna, perform coding changes with VCDS etc?

Thanks!

Thanks Simbo, I did see the back of the unit briefly and saw where the GPS aerial connected, looked pretty straight forward for an ICE novice like me!

Any links to what I'd need to buy? I have a contact close by with VCDS.

I'm undecided now, I'm guessing that it won't need a security code?

No doubt the sale of my current Bolero would contribute towards the cost too.

My only gripe is the screen on the Amundsen looks smaller than the one on the Bolero, strange!

Since christmas when i bought my superb I've changed from the standard bolero to amsunden & now to led columbus / as above states you will need to install a mic with gps puk aerial under the dash also a new surround from your local dealers or tps approx £20 / i have also now changed to the elegance spec combined gps & phone aerial for my premium bluetooth kit, meaning i have the best signal for both functions.

if you need a mic kit i have a brand new genuine mic with the extension lead from the mirror to the head unit for sale pm if your interested.

Cheers chaps, I've decided against it.

I'm not desperate for integrated sat nav, however for the price it was on offer if it had been pug and play then I'd have maybe gone for it.

Additional aerials, mic's, fascia's and coding means I'll stick with the larger screen Bolero and a separate TomTom for now.

Thanks for the help though gents
