Drive shaft/ Front hub nut

Featured Replies

I have a drive shaft to replace on my son's 1.9SDi 2001.

The original looks (not removed yet) to have an allen key type nut/screw where as the replacement we ordered off the internet has a 16 point nut.

We took the new one out the box and noticed the nut on he new one doesn't seem to screw on very far in that threads of the nut can be seen when it seems to have bottemed out on the shaft. So I'm not sure what looks like 2 locking tabs on the nut would actually do anything.

Are there different drive shafts?

What's the torque setting for the hub nut?

Thanks

Having fitted one recently, I had the same worry about the threads on the new-style (12-point) nut making it look like it wasn't done up far enough. However, mine had the new style on the other side already to compare with, and this seems normal, a few turns of thread unused.  Torque is 50Nm + further 45° turn.

Here's the untouched one on my Polo:

Thanks Wino.

Did you have the allen key nut on your old one?

Do the tabs on the new nut allow a one way trip only, kind of self locking against something as you tighten it?

No it was 12-point before as well. (I got both types in the CV boot kit I was using; the allen key type look so flimsy, but there should never be any load on it really, I guess?)

I'm not sure what the locking bits might do, once the driveshaft is through the hub you can't really see what's going on in there.
