Restoring leather steering wheel

Featured Replies

The texture of the leather MFSW in my Yeti has rubbed smooth and shiny as seems to be quite common after 40-50,000 miles use.

The spokes still clearly show the texture that would have been across the whole wheel.

Any suggestions on how to recover this texture and clean + preserve the leather as well?

If it can be used in the 'leather' seats as well that will be a huge bonus and will save me having to buy extra.

All I have at present is the Skoda leather preserver which is OK at keeping it supple, but that's about all.

You could try a leather cleaner

I keep saying this but:

Nice and easy - Dr Leather Wipes to clean the leather and get rid of the shine.

Then a protector for the leather. Something like Gtechniq L1 or Gyeon Leather Coat works well and are relatively cheap.

(There is no need to 'condition' modern leather as it actually has a protective layer over the top so any conditioning will actually cause dirt to stick and damage the leather.)

Absolutely spot-on Ben ; i have been very impressed by the Dr Leather wipes - thanks for the recommendation!

Ive never used them..I use Gliptone leather cleaner...smells of leather too!! ...youre right to say conditioner is waste of time though

Experimentation is key here KBPhoto with products or recommendations...

Try a leather cleaner..you will be surprised how much dirt it brings out!!

Glad you rate them Ste. I just find them so easy to use as well as being very effective. No messing about with applicators or anything.

I've used Gliptone Leather Cleaner and agree it really does bring out the grime. I've done my steering wheel a few times and it's horrendous!

The right hand side of mine is worst - very worn and shiny. Can't seem to get it back to the original texture though.

I tend to just give it a wipe with my 3M Leather Wipes now.

Some good tips there. Thank you.

I've tried 3M leather wipes but they make the leather slippery. Acceptable on the seats, but not on the steering wheel!

Will look at a decent leather cleaner if people think that will clean it and bring back some of the texture.
