Switching from manual to DSG - any tips?

Hi everyone!

So I've ordered my new Skoda Fabia SE L 110 TSI with DSG which is scheduled to be built on the 13th of April.

Never actually driven an automatic car before. My current car is a red Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo. SO Any tips you can have on switching from manual to DSG will be most helpful!

Enjoy it, it is so simple to drive.

Read the Owners Manual & especially the 'Running in',  & the Automatic Gearbox section.

Keep your left foot totally away from the Brake pedal.

A very very easy skill to acquire.

A bigger problem is stepping back into a manual car and remembering that one has to clutch when approaching a Stop.

if you have never driven a manual, here is a few things:

 

1) FORGET your left foot, many people new to autos, just go for a gearchange and smash the brake on , just be careful of that ;)

2) NEVER put the handbrake on and release the footbrake when its in drive.... if you are waiting stationary a long time,and want to use the handbrake, put it in neutral!

3) there is an electronic hill holder, on steep hills it sometime takes a second for the clutches to engage, just give it a second, or press the gas gently. (some people have issues with it. I don't know why, i teach people to drive in mine, and none of my learners have ever had any issues with it)

4) after getting used to it, I doubt you will every go back to a manual again,  I know I wont! :) after a few thousand miles, you will realise you can control how the box reacts depending on the input from your right foot... it become intuative :)

Thanks guys! All your tips are great... I had a go in my parent's kia and couldn't get the brake right... My LEFT foot kept going for clutch lol

I guess will have to have another go before my new FABIA arrives!

You will get used to it, like others have said, put your left foot on the footrest and keep it there, when spending any time stationary put the car in neutral, this is not like an old style automatic car, it has clutches similar to a manual car but automatically controlled so if you leave it in gear with the handbrake on you will soon get problems. It should be smooth as silk and be an enjoyable experience. I only went back to manual after automatic in my Octavia due to wanting more control towing and manoeuvring my caravan.

With the stop start function there's no need to use neutral. Engine is off and the gearbox is in neutral already.

DSG also has hill hold function so if you stop completely the handbrake cones on automatically.

Just release the footbrake and the creep function comes in. Parallel parking on a hill is so much easier!

The 'Hand Brake' does not come on automatically.

The Hill Hold Control holds the car for 2 seconds does it not?

I have just part-ex'd my Roomster manual for a Roomster DSG.  My first auto in 40+ years of driving.

DSG is awesome. I would not want to go back to a manual.

Hill hold control is through the handbrake. It will hold you for a few seconds and then start to creep as normal. If you're holding the footbrake while in gear it comes on too. Can do some very accurate parking as you can release the footbrake a little and it will creep gently

'Braking System',it  functions, Holds.

but you still have a mechanical Hand Brake on your car not an Electric Safety / Hand Brake,

that makes the Hand brake work, and no 'Cable' pull has functioned, rear Pads or Shoes will have applied though..

So you might mean the front and rear brakes apply,

but it does not 'automatically put on the Hand Brake'. as said in post #7

 

I do know about Hill Hold Control, i drive cars with HHC, and bothered to understand the system correctly.

Press the foot brake and you can just hold on the Brakes, press harder and you can have HHC.

HHC releases the brakes you can move, you can creep if you want, park etc.

At no point was 'The Hand Brake Automatically on'.

I used to fit Hand Controls, Throttles / Brakes for Disabled Drivers, on cars with DSG and other types of Gearboxes.

I have only one foot, so the function is handy, but thank fullythere is also the Hand Brake available to use when parking,

because some might not always want HHC operating as you park on slopes.

The Fabia has its own mechanical handbrake

The hill hold control is separately but automatically actioned to the rear brakea

Rear brakes or handbrake as I mentioned are the same caliper.

Take your left leg, tie it round your neck.. job done! :D
