How fast??

Featured Replies

ok, as a recent addition to skoda botherer's club, I was never actually sure of my octy vrs actuall performance figures, apart from the 180bhp bit that's bandied about.

well, I have seen an unbeliveable 150 on the clock, on a slightly downhill stretch of motorway after upsetting some berk in a audi (middle of night and deserted/camera free) and was shocked/amazed/baffled...

dont normally drive at those sort of velocites (even on my bike) but that was barmy!

someone please tell me what this crazy car is capable of so i dont have to find out the hard way (m'lud)

If you have a few more horses, you'll hit the physical limits of the standard transmission (not engine), i.e. the rev limiter in fifth which I believe is around 172mph. If you want to go quicker, you'll need a different box. Jon's old RS spent a lot of time bouncing off the limiter going round the ring IIRC :D

ooerr..have done 170 on a rather large japanese motorcycle and that was plenty too fast..cant imagine it's much better in a car!

whats it supposed to do in stock form?

Are you ****ing serious? 100 odd percent over the speed limit? And you're bragging about it on a public forum?

That's a bit irresponsible, don't you think. No matter how few people, cameras etc.

British roads ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR 150MPH.

quite so..not somthing to brag about (which I wasnt)..and not somthing i would do again but it was an empty motorway and I was trying to escape a car full of idiots who took execption to me blasting my horn at em for pulling out on me at a roundabout.

They might not be good enough for you. If someone wants to do that speed, and they consider it safe to do so, why is it any of your, or anyone elses business? You weren't there as far as I'm aware, and you have no idea of Custard's driving ability.

I wasn't there either, nor do I know custard, but he is still here to tell us about it, no accidents were mentioned, no near misses, whats the problem?

Why did YOU buy a car capable of such high speed?

Not trying to fall out with you, but it's the principle of giving someone a hard time because they have deemed appropriate to see how fast thier car will go, on a road that in their opinion, is safe to do so at the time.

The nurburgring is far more dangerous than a quiet straight stretch of a uk motorway. Full commitment through blind corners, over blind crests, changing surfaces, bad cambers, dry to wet, clear to foggy. Get a grip man, live and let live.

Shifty got a point WRC. Don't wanna fall out either, but it ain't any of your business and you ain't the long arm of the law.

I'll bet you've had your moments of breaking the law on the road before. Anyone who says no and drives a car like the Octavia vRS is a liar. I mean the guy already said he doesn't usually drive like that, give him a break and have a laugh about it.

cheers lads, nice to know Im not the only one who lives in the "real" world.without wanting to start a long debate about speed limits what would you have done in that situation? had I been driving my other halfs 1.2 polo I may have got my head kicked in by the "brothers" who were after my blood..or worse.

if you buy a performance car it's there to be used.

my gran drives a beat up old felica. does about six miles a week and mostly at 25mph.

it's what it was bought for.

my vrs is a performance car.made to go quick in a safe efficient manner.

speed is not a killer, speed in the wrong place is the problem.

as a motorcyclist I know that better than most.

for the record..no accidents since passing test in 1987...only had 3 points in driving history..usually do 25k a year (car, bike, work) I am aware of dangers of speeding, but it's all down to when and where. (and who's chasing you)

It's nice to know you can get away when you need to.

as for irrisposible...well, I only wanted to know just what the top end performance of the octy vrs was because I was amazed it got to that speed (which was indicated ob the speedo..obviously nowhere near the actual speed allowing for overreading)

I dont think anyone reading this is going to go out and max out their vrs because of what I wrote.

if you think that's irrisponsible you should read what the ***** mag max power publish every month.

Good call

Mine does 140mph mate, thats on the gps. It just popped over 150 mph on the speedo :D

I went out and did it tonight having read your post. You made me do it. I am that gullable you see. It's like when I watched texas chainsaw.....well thats for another forum.

Niether are the driving skills of most british motorists.

hahahaha! like that..wonder if this would work too...GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY...you know you want to! no? well..just goes to show. 140 is quite impressive for a 1.8 litre car..now I can understand why they are so expensive to insure. make a good getaway car too (oh *ollocks..now everyone reading this will go out and do the local post office over too) actually, thats why every other octavia i see is a taxi.

whats faster than a speeding mini cab? not much.

the black cabs are quite slow tho...wonder if they can be chiped! :D

Do you mean the 2.0 TDi won't do 150 mph? ****! My dealer better have some answers!

Custard,

A standard Octavia vRS should be good for 146mph if the official figures are correct - I cannot verify this as I do not have a stretch of 'private road' ;) long enough to do this testing; however at an "approximate" speed of 13/31*(e^(sqrt(pi^3))) mph (you may need a calculator to work out the speed I am referring to  :P ) I can confirm that my car is still pulling demonically with no signs of slowing down  :D

Either i'm rusty or that's only about 2mph

That's why it still pulls like crazy :P ;) ;)

surely one rather big issue is that it was on a public road, which in this country makes it illegal.

furthermore other road users may not be as "capable" as the driver doing 150mph. so may in turn get in his way etc. yeah it was quiet but not closed. not many people drive down the motorway expecting someone to be doing more than double the speed they should be.

I have trouble keeping up with those loonies on the bike

You need to pedal faster!:rofl:

Speed seems to be contentious on this forum. I mean everybody (including me) would like to nail it once in a whilst avoiding speed cameras or killing people. Life's not that simple though and its the unknown factors that always catch people out like a dog on the road or an old biddy pulling out of her drive at 3mph.

totally agree, i would say 99% of people speed at some point but over double the speed limit in my eyes isnt safe on main roads

I saw a van the other day that had smashed into a deer that had obviously run out in front of him, it's likely he was doing 50-60mph but it's quite scary to think what would happen if one ran onto the motorway while one is driving at double the national speed limit.

Let's face it, you are doing every mile in under 30 seconds and you aren't going to swerve at that speed and live to tell the tale.

I haven't got my :soapbox: out or anything because I am certianly not in a position to lecture others on speeding but it really makes you think doesn't it?

And yes, I would have done the same thing to avoid a good kicking (or worse). Maybe not at 150mph though, mines a diesel and doesnt like the fun side of 130
