Coolant level sensor

Featured Replies

I assume the coolant level sensor is in the expansion bottle? I am getting the red warning light but the level is unchanged in the bottle indicating a sensor issue hopefully (especially after my read was changed recently).

If it is somewhere else though I guess I could have an airlock and a more serious issue?

Thanks in advance

Adam

The sensor is the two metal prongs in the bottle

Thanks Trundle I thought it must be them. It looks like it is a sensor issue then. Are they integrated into the bottle do you know?

Common problem on Mk 1 Octy. Fix is to clean the two prongs to remove the crud. Small brush will do it.

Yeah I tried a toothbrush but the light is still on. I will give it a proper go in the light tomorrow. I detected what was possibly a very faint film on the coolant but it might have been an illusion from torch. Hope its not oil - not sure how the sensor works, could it be oil that is preventing the sensor detecting the liquid?

Just a few weeks ago had the low level light stuck on in my Mk2 vRS. Garage said sensor just needed a clean (as per above) and so far so good. New sensors are only a few pounds I think if a new one is needed.

Thanks. So separate from the bottle then? Was hard to see in the dark...

No, all one unit. Try scraping the prongs with a screwdriver to get the crud off.

Screwdriver seemed to work, at least for now anyway based on my commute to work..

And what I thought was a film on the coolant looks like it was a trick of the torchlight so panic over on that front!

Well despite the clean the light is back on but the level unchanged. Looking in the manual the level can apparently double as an indicator of high coolant temperature although the MFD clearly said level. Presuming I can trust the MFD, I am going to try changing the sensor. Given its integrated into the bottle, a quick look suggests its a touch tricky to drain coolant on the BKD engine from the lower bottle hose. Is there perhaps a drain c*ck somewhere please?
