Waste gate problem

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just into my third year of driving an Octavia 1.4tsi Elegance & just out of warranty I started to experience a problem that it has taken 3 visits to Skoda to sort out, I wonder if anyone else had this problem or has experienced the same? I did read some posts on Briskoda with similar problems but on diesel-engine cars.

Quite a few times under hard acceleration in 3rd or 4th the car stutters with a loss of power &/or surges, on one occasion not being able to rev over 3000rpm & a second time when the engine management light illuminated briefly. The first time at the dealer 2 fault codes were indicated; the turbo boost switch & the turbo bypass valve. On the second visit they couldn't find any fault & the third time yesterday they managed to replicate the problem & diagnosed it as something to do with the waste gate. On consultation with Skoda they were told it was a known problem & there is a kit to fix it, however Allams in Epsom say they never heard of it, had never fitted the kit before & couldn't (or wouldn't) explain any further what exactly it is. They want the car for a least a day, if not 2, so I suppose it's a big engine job

Any idea's, I read that with diesel it could be the flywheel protection software to the ECU but this is a petrol engine?

Thanks for any help!

I don't think the diesel issues are relevant to your problem.

Diesel uses a variable geometry turbo, petrol uses a fixed turbo & a wastegate.

The petrol does't have the DMF like the diesel.

As its "just out of warrenty" and a known issue you could try to convince them it should be covered under warrenty or at least contribute to the costs perhaps?

Is this an O3 ? because you've posted in the O3 section

Yes themanwithnoaim, it's a 3rd generation Skoda, registered January 2012, not the newest shape - is that what you meant?

If it's a Jan 2012 then its a facelifted Mk2.  You'll probably get a better response in that forum.  The 1.4 TSI in the current MK3 Octavia is a different engine.

Of course you're right, I have now slinked into the Octavia II forum with my tail between my legs!! Cheers

Since the subject of waste gates has come up, my 14 plate 1.4 TSI (very definitely a Mark 3) suffered a waste gate problem which led to the whole turbo being replaced under warranty.

I got a random EPC warning for no obvious reason.  The car continued to run normally and when I restarted the engine the warning had gone and never came back.  As a precaution I phoned my dealers who told me to bring the car in for a diagnostic check.  Between the phone call and the dealer visit the car continued to run fine, including a couple of 50-odd mile motorway trips. I took it in expecting to be there for half and hour and be told it was a sensor fault or something.  Two hours later I was handed the keys to a 1.2 Rapid loan car and told they were going to replace the turbo because of a fault with the waste gate.   It took them about ten days to get the new turbo during which I learned that "1.2 Rapid" was a contradiction in terms!

I don't know if the turbo in the Mk3 1.4 is the same as the one in the Mk2 but if there is a kit available to fix the problem it's surprising that they replaced the whole turbo which is a pretty expensive warranty claim.

No need to slink Stratfordboy, just felt you might get a better responce from the correct sub-section, thats all.

True but presumably they would have to justify the claim to SUK?
