Satnav shows I'm in Germany

Featured Replies

I went to use my Amundsen satnav today and for some unknown reason the map said I was in Germany and all my POI's were in Germany but the voice directions were correct and also the navigation display on the maxidot was correct and wondered if anybody could shed any light about why Germany is being displayed on the map and also an easy fix? Thanks for any assistance that can be given.

Wolfsburg to be precise, which is where VW have their largest production unit, its also where the Amundsen goes to when it throws a strop.

Give it a softboot and it'll get over it.

Strange, I had this today also

I clicked on a traffic notice icon on the map of my Columbus Nav screen, when I came back to the map it showed Wolfsberg German until I clicked on the auto zoom button.

Sorry can't help explain why though, maybe just a bug?

Indeed, a number of readers e-mailed me direct to say they had also experienced it. The issue was best explained by one of them, Peter Brownless, who told me: “What sends it to Germany is if you happen to press on a traffic warning. When you return from the warning, it’s always to Germany. Pressing the symbol that looks like an overhead view of the car restores normality.”

I tried this a few times, and found Peter’s theory to be correct more often than not. So if you’re an Octavia owner, keep your finger on that ‘overhead’ symbol and you’ll soon be back in Blighty...

Finally have upgraded the map on the yeti satnav - got a VW disc from the internet for only £19.95 post free.

Elsewhere on the form, a user had posted a link to the website- can order west or east europe CD - it arrived in good time too

Took ages to install but did warn me if I tried to take out the cd too soon.

Much happier with the £20 option but how come an octavia owner can do this for nothing?

Its because the grid reference centering for the mapping is probably set to Wolfsburg given all the mapping and GIS work for it was probably done by Volkswagen in house.

The mapping should probably have country specific centering really (i.e in UK it would centre on London etc etc) but it would mean having to configure mapping per country.

Its not a big deal...I find mine tends to only really ever do it if I take location track off (i.e the nav stops following the position of the car and just stays on a section of map) or occasionally after exiting (and often incorrect or completely mistimed) traffic announcement.

The MIB1 systems are riddled with silly little bugs anyway, the mapping thing is really small fry.....it annoys me more that even when you turn off autozoom and use a manual zoom scale the zoom level still changes and randomly too.
