DRLs stopped working, blown bulb light on dash

Featured Replies

Heard 3 pops / bangs on the way home last night and didn't think anything of it presuming it was just gravel flying up in the arches or on the sills however, this morning when I started the car the blown bulb warning light was on, I had a quick look around and noticed that my DRLs weren't lit.

On restarting the car and every time since the bulb out warning light didn't come on.  I do need tio check the brake bulbs with my wife's assistance when at home tonight and the outer 2 tail light bulbs altough I have heard that these 2 may not be linked to the bulb out warning system.but I've checked other bulbs and tried all configurations of head / side lights and all seem OK other than still nothing from the DRLs,

Is there a way of determing the exact fault and if it's the DRLs are they an easy / cheap fix?

If the DRL's are not working then this is why you are getting the blown-bulb warning.

On the vRS the DRL's are LED so it is highly unlikely the LED's have failed, especially both at the same time.

The DRL's also double up as side (parking) lights (they dim).

When you turn on side lights do the LED DRL's light up or are they completely dead on all positions of the headlight switch?

It sounds as though the CCM / BCM may be at fault if you heard some electrical pops from behind the dashboard?

Thanks silver, whilst at lunch - I went to look in maxidot and the DRL box was unticked, I ticked it and hey presto the DRLs are back on, all functioning fine.

The pops I heard on my way home last night sounded to be from the back nearside.

In answer to your question, the DRLs did not work with the light switch in any position.

Glad you sorted it! Not many vRS's have Maxidot so no DRL's usually means a problem.

It might be worth having another check though, even with DRL's unticked in Maxidot they should still light up when the side lights or dipped headlights are turned on as the DRL's double up as side lights.

Sidelights / headlights off = DRL's on a full brightness (unless turned off via Maxidot).

Sidelights / headlights on = DRL's on at partial brightness (regardless of if they are turned on/off in Maxidot).

Thanks again silver, I'll check the function of them as side lights tonight when I check the brake light bulbs with the assistance of SWMBO although as I recall I couldn't distinguish any noticeable drop in intensity when I checked this, purely out of interest, some months ago.

It is good that they are working again but also rather worrying that they stopped and the box for DRL in maxidot had become unticked - an intermittent fault is the worst of all.
