FL 1.6 TDI Strange jingling/ringing noise CR105

Featured Replies

Hi guys -

I've had a 2011 Octavia 2 TDI FL for around a year now. It's just clocked 70K and it's a great car! Does everything I need in comfort and it's really solid!

We recently drove down to Devon from London and covered around 1000 miles over a few days. While we were down there I heard a new sound coming from the engine. A sort of metallic ringing or jingling sound at about 2000 revs, 60 mph in 4th gear. The noise came and died-down with the revs of the engine.

It was quite loud (enough to notice it over the road noise on an A road).

Anyway, the next day the sound had gone and I had forgotten about it until yesterday when it came back driving home from work. And now it's gone again!

I'm a bit worried that something is wrong (I don't know a great deal about engines) as it really does sound like something is loose!

The noise is 100% coming from the engine and I can only really hear it in the cabin - Can't really hear it from the front but obviously the engine is only idling when I take a listen outside.

Has anyone come across anything like this? Do I need to be worried or am I just hearing general TDI noises? I've searched Briskoda and google and cant really find anything matching what I'm hearing.

Cheers guys

I lived with a metallic jingling noise for the best part of 2 years.... Alternator belt went yesterday.... took it to Sunset in Derby and they put a new belt on and a new alternator pulley (some sort of free-wheel device thing) total cost including vat was best part of £175... drove home tonight and am now wondering why I can't hear the jingly jangly sound!!! Could the alternator pulley really be the cause.... and should it last that long before tearing your belt apart?????.... One thing to not though is my 05 plate has 240K on the clock and it was the original belt so £170 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things!!!!
