Bag yourself a 3.6.

Featured Replies

LPg has a lower energy content than petrol so for the same bhp you need more lpg than you would petrol but its half the price, its a no brainer really

If you buy a 3.6 the last thing you want to be is easy on the throttle, seems pointless getting it if you are. You'll get more torque from the diesel 170 ,if you have it remapped even more so ,you can also hammer it & get 45 mog ;-)

My 170 Superb only averaged 42-44 mpg in the 6 years and 86k that I owned it , hammering it could result in low 30's mpg , normal driving to normal driving the 3.6 is always going to do 10-12 mpg less than the diesel but will do it in a nicer way, with 4wd, and much less fuss and noise, and for those that do average mileage would only cost about £800 more on fuel .

All i can say is that the 3.6 V6 in my car makes it such a pleasure to drive.... i honestly never complain on fuel or road tax.

I do very low mileage though and its no great issue; but we all have out limits and budgetary contraints i'm sure.

As a few have said.... you only live once.... who knows how long V8, V6 etc will be in existence.... buy it and enjoy!

WRONG......or at least for me, better to cruise than bruise

Loved my old Rover P5 3ltr straight 6, only wanted a V8 for that V8 burble

TBH for £9K I could by much more that would suit my non-work driving taste and loves, certainly NOT FWD either!

The torque figures for the 2 litre and 3.6 are the same so why cruise doing 28 mpg when you can cruise at 50 mpg and with a remap you're going to have more torque with the diesel

I notice that all the alloys are wrecked and yeah, it doesn't have Park Assist, just the front sensors.

We don't all need to drive diesels :)

Very true. I'd love a 3.6 for the refinement, smoothness, silence and 4x4..... but I love my 170 for the grunt AND amazing MPG.

Since I've had mine remapped it's almost like driving my old ST diesel  mondeo,  pulls like a train , leaps forward on acceleration , it's transformed :-)

The 170 diesel does have a lot of torque but the 3.6 produces its torque from 2500-5000 rpm so much broader spread, so much nicer to cruise and is OVER 2 seconds faster to 60, mapped or not the 170 wouldn't touch it

With a chip or remap, th 170 wouldn't be much slower TO 60, but then again, AT sixty, the 3.6 WON'T be returning 65mpg....;)

nor will the 170 ;)

Who cares about 65 mpg theres always a Green line available! :)

nor will the 170 ;)

Really? What's the best you got on yours?

49mpg actual fill to fill, got that a couple of times but only in the summer on holidays to France, mfd showed 62mpg on one trip, but was not accurate.

Like the pd170 we had before it the car averaged 42-44 mpg in daily use over 6 years and 80k+, I know others get more but you need to meet the right conditions to get great economy out of a diesel and we rarely did living in the South East with its congested roads

Glad we don't do the mileage to warrant a diesel anymore really

On a fill to fill on a round trip London-Withenshaw-London - that's just over 400 miles - I averaged 62.2; this was after I'd fitted a Chip Express unit (which I have to say is amazing) and yes, I drive like a granny - 60 to 70 all the way on cruise. It was a late start out and return so practically no M40/25 congestion.

On my daily 95 mile commute in our MKI, which was nearly all motorway - M25, 3, A329m, M4 and the same in reverse, I was averaging 46 fill to fill. That was 115k miles in 5 years. I too don't do the mileage to warrant a diesel either anymore, but I just love the grunt vs a similar-sized petrol. I still have our MKI and take that out once a month. In my experience, the PD140 is dramatically less fuel efficient than the CR170 so I'm surprised you received similar MPG. Heyho...

I admire your commitment to soot chucking but in std guise both Petrol Superbs are faster than the 170 diesel options.

Same with a stage 1 map.

The diesel simply feels quick because of delivery of that shove

See we re back to the Diesel / Petrol debate.

Anyone kno if the 3.6 superb has gone ?

Sorry :(

Sorry :(

Yup, sorry...

never driven a 140 so wouldnt know

Dropping in price heavily :) I expect it to continue when the new petrols land. Easy 300bhp plus with low running costs. May pick a bargain up myself in the next few months.

Whoops - sorry Rich!
