1.4TDI

Featured Replies

Just been looking at the facts and figures on Parkers for the Mk1 1.4TDI... looks like it'd be half decent. Just wondering what people's thoughts were on them?

I'm not looking to change car yet but it's inevitable I'll get bored of my 1.9SDI eventually and the 1.4TDI is only one insurance group up but seems to have a fair bit more torque etc. I wouldn't want (and can't afford) a performance car, just something that can climb hills with 4 on board :D

Cheers!

They are brilliant.

Just a baby pd130 really. Come with Vrs reliability but without the power. Great on fuel.

While I like my 70bhp (BNM code) version, and it has exceeded all my expectations on the climb over the Pennines every day, our 80bhp version is just so much better. There is much more torque from the 80bhp version, the only thing spoiling it is the gearing as its the Mk.2 Greenline, at 30mph you cannot really be above 3rd gear while mine can be in 4th, but you appear to be looking at a Mk.1. Not sure what the 75bhp version is like (Mogwye has both a 75 and 80bhp versions so can probably comment). One other thing with the 56 plate 70bhp classic is the when it required a gearbox the price was horrendous 2nd hand as it appears to be a box (HCS code) that is unique to this level of tune - same with the clutch which is a different diameter (unique) with a higher cost.

Over 47K miles it has averaged 54.3mpg (litres into tank vs speedo mileage).

I love my 1.4TDI PD75. I do quite a few miles and it's excellent on fuel and has no problem overtaking, maintaining high speeds etc. Had my gearbox rebuilt a while back and got the 5th gear changed for a longer one while I was at it; revs at about 2.1k when you're doing 70 now.

Thanks guys, sounds like an excellent car. Just out of interest, how much would I expect to pay for a reasonable* example with MOT?

*generally decent nick, no major issues but not mint!

I've had my 04 for a lot of years ,and it's great. Someone queried it's motorway credentials- but it cruises at 70 with no problems ( it's capable of instant ban speeds too). I once did a trip from Midlands ( on motorway) to up north ( A82 territory) in approx 6 hours ( dad had stroke ,in hospital) , and it just kept going. Something like 420 miles in 6-6.5 hours, Work that out ,and average is 60-70 ,so what was highest ?In town and on most roads ( save motorway at speeds ) it gives me 50 /50+ without any fancy looking for economy driving.

my SO has a MK2 fabia with the 1.4 TDi engine. Takes the same filters and oil as my PD130 but with a cylinder less. Hers is the 80bhp version. not a bad motor. The only comment I've seen with these is not to run them too low on the oil as the oil pump can fail.

I got my 54 plate in February last year. I paid around £2.4k, that was with 79k miles, fsh, MOT and a full service inc cambelt change. It's a Classic, only extra on it is air-con, even the remote central locking was added on by the previous owner.
