How do Insurance Companies view engine swaps?

Featured Replies

Just a thought... how do insurance companies view an engine swap if it's not a like-for-like?

I'm being purely hypothetical here because I don't have the tools or know-how but if I were to drop a 1.4TDI lump with no other performance mods into my 1.9SDI, in theory that just makes it into a stock 1.4TDI, which is only one insurance group higher than my SDI. Would the insurance compaines see it like that or would they pump my premium up because I've modified the car?

It'll be seen as a mod and not like for like.

Everyday Comparison Site & Mainstream Insurance Company / Brokers might making a sucking in noise.

& the Computer says no.

Specialist Insurance providers like those on Briskoda deal with this as a matter of course & its a big part of their business.

No need to cost more actually car / engine / driver / situation dependent.

they don't like it trust i have a fully forged astra vxr lump in a corsa vxr and with the mods in my name they wanted just over 3k hence why i got it on my traders policy which the vxr is covered for 20k and they didn't even ask about mods just value and mileage also my fabia is on there covered for 5k

That is a good Traders Policy that lets you run your personal cars on it.

Can you say who it is with?

An astra lump in a Corsa . Interesting.

I half expect you to have played and tinkered into making the mid engined Corsa Vxr (can't remember the name of it). "Who needs rear seats anyways?" ;)

To the Op - as it isn't 'stock' and has been changed it won't be a simple "Yes sir/Madam that is fine" answer from your insurer. Unfortunately.

I know you've checked insurance groups but have you actually got a quote for a 1.4TDI to compare the costs to what you have now? When I was looking for a car, the SDI cost more to insure despite the insurance group.

Hi,

On most of our modified schemes and engine change to a higher specification engine would normally be rated as if the vehicle was a standard higher specification model.

Regards,

Dan.
