Stiff gearbox

Featured Replies

Lately my gear changes feel weird, struggles to go into reverse sometimes and feels like its getting stuck halfway and when I try to reverse it grinds so I have to keep putting it into 1st then reverse again, this is ****ing me off now as its embarrassing trying to do a 3 point turn in traffic lol

Which engine/gearbox?

How many miles?

Phil

Is the clutch clearing OK? Does it go into 1st OK?

Mine doesnt always go straight into reverse. If i roll forward ever so slightly it pops in nicely, or if i put it back in neutral, let the clutch out and put it in again, it usually goes in nicely.

The T5 we have is the same sometimes too.

I believe you will find that the clutch is not fully disengaging.

There will be a stiffnes in getting the forward gears (which are all syncromeshed) - however there is no syncro on reverse. This means that the reverse idler is trying to 'mate' with a turning gear. That gear is turning because the first motion shaft and layshaft have not stopped when you have attempted to declutch.
