Knock/clunking noise when going from lock to lock

Featured Replies

Hi All,

The vRS has developed a loud clunking when going from one side to the other. It knocks the loudest just after going past centre. Thought it might be the CV joints but just tried driving round the car park at work with full lock both ways and there is no knocking when driving on full lock either side, so not sure it is the CV joint?

I though it might be the top mounts as i had to undo these to get the strut brace off to replace the air filter, so i torqued these up but no change.

In the past 18 months i have replace the console bushes for cupra ones and the front wishbone bushes for powerflex ones so will be surprised if it is these.

Drop links seam to be in good condition and there is no play in the ARB.

Bit stumped as to what to check next, any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Russ

Inner driveshaft possibly

Inner driveshaft possibly

Would this still make the knocking noise when there is no weight on the front wheels?

Just tried to get as far under the car as i could, while a friend went from lock to lock. The creaking/knocking seams to be coming from around the subframe in between the console bushes, could the dog bone mount be responsible for this?

i guess the next step would be to wind the suspension up so i can get further under the car whilst still keeping load on the front :(

Cheers

Russ

Have you got jacks and stands? Lift car up both sides.support on stands. If you rock one wheel at 3and 9 position look to other wheel same time to see if move in tanderm.(youtube it)

Could be dogbone mount.

I would go jack up route 1st to see if sound still there or how clear/faint it is

Thanks for this. Jacked it up, movement fine and no noise!

Took out the Subframe bolts out, one by one and cleaned them up as they were well corroded. Lubbed 'em with some silicone spray, torqued them up and dropped it back down. No more squeaking. Looks like the Subframe bolts were seized and then became un-seized causing the Squeaking when force was transferred through them.

Car will be off the road till i can get to the stealer's for a new set but looks like a cheap/easy fix :)

Ordered a Proflex dog bone mount just in case (and then all the front suspension will be upgraded)

On the downside noticed that both CV boots are starting to split so need to get on to that next weekend before they start loosing grease/letting in grit.

You can buy universal boots with the grease for these they with clips.BUT i would buy some large jubilee clips which work alot better and stay on.

Btw look up eric car guy on youtube hes got good section on rattles and knocks lol.

There isn't enough clearance between the cv joint/driveshaft and the hub to use jubilee clips so it isn't an option on the mk1 VRS unfortunately.

I would recommend getting a proper set of pliers to nip up the metal bands that hold the boot in place as they are an absolute pig to get tight, stay on and keep the grease in!
