VCDS - lite

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've heard of VCDS-lite but never used it.  I realise that I would need to download it and buy some form of a connector to my lap top.

Been on the http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_2.html#Shareware site but find it confusing.

I am reasonably IT proficient, and should be able to use this, but need a wee hand to get started.

Skoda Fabia  AZQ engine, 1.2 litre petrol, 2003. Problem: Engine missing at around 45 to 60 mph when cursing in 4th or 5th gear.  So far:  New plugs, New fuel filter, Disconnected battery to "rest" ECU, checked and cleaned as many connections as can find, bought 1 new coil and used it to try and eliminate a faulty coil by substituting it for one of the 3 coils in rotation - realise that I should buy 2 to properly do this but trying to keep cost down.

Can anyone advise me how to down load the software above,  where best to get it, does it come with a "user" manual, where to get a connecting cable and where on the car I connect it to?  I.e. can you provide an idiots user guide?

All the best, Tony:-)

I'm afraid I can't be of amazing service - but what I can say is that the connector is available from EBay, not certain of the name, USB to OBD perhaps?

The port that you connect it into is behind the cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel. The little compartment that fits a can in perfectly - if you open it, and then pull it again it will fold out completely, revealing the port for diagnosis/scanning equipment.

I'm sure someone else will be here to advise on the downloading of the software. :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Just in from work and took the car with me today, 30 miles round trip, and ran like a sweetheart.

The fault is intermittent and can be absent for days then come back.  70,000 mile on the clock.  it seems to be when the car is warm it occurs most often.  But not related to the length of journey.

Will have a look for the interface after I'm fed,Jrjg.

And will have a go with the web site then also, sorry I can't take you up on your generous offer Stevobeavo, but I'm in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

Found the port no problem, thanks.

Sorry Stevobeavo, but although the links you sent me are brilliant, I don't know how to decide which interface is the one to download.  There seem to be 6 choices  and I don't understand any of it.

Like I said, I really need the guide for dummies.  This is my first time attempting to do this, but I need help understanding this. I've wasted my youth understanding carburettors.

That is not a wasted youth at all!

Thanks Wino,

Got it into my lap top but it's asking me to choose a com port 1 to 4?

And thanks for the advice about disconnecting the battery, thought I'd cracked it once I'd done that, then it came back.

Have you bought your interface cable yet? I seem to remember you have to plug that into a USB port, then check what COM port number the computer has installed it on, then change that to somewhere in the range 1-4 if it is a higher number, before you ever get to the stage of trying to connect it to the car. Or something like that. You can't do any of that stuff until the cable is plugged in to the computer that you've put the software onto.

Winos correct. You need the cable to do the com port. I think I followed a YouTube video on how to assign the cable to a com port.

And then another video to see how to use it.

Hidden power.com has some good guides on how to use it.

Bought one off eBay.  So when it arrives I'll see what's on the disk, that is on the picture of it on eBay, and take it from there.

I'll also have a look on Hidden power.com. and You-Tube.

Ta for all the useful advice!

Just been following this.

Can someone advise on what functions you can access with the lite version?

(Namely the beeps when locking and unlocking, but would be interested to see what else you can access; data reading ect)

I am fairly sure all that VCDS Lite is able to do is read and record and clear fault codes.

In order to start altering functions (beeps - door locking, activating cruise control etc) I think you need to buy the 'complete' version, which off the top of my head is around £80-100?? Alternatively you could ask on the forum for a member nearby that already has VagCom.

You need the licensed version of VCDS lite to be able to code things and do full fault scans. Think a license is around £60 plus a interface your looking at £70.
