Some advice Re Hardwiring Dashcam.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have a quick question which I'd like to ask for some advice from the more knowledgeable members of this forum.

I took delivery of my new dashcam yesterday which will be installed in my vRS when it comes.  I purchased a hardwire kit with the camera but it didn't come with any installation instructions.

I have viewed lots of videos on YouTube re hardwiring into the fusebox and I thought that I was quite confident in tackling this....That was until I opened the hardwire box and looked at the sticker on it.

I have attached 3 pictures, one showing the box, the second a close up of the sticker and the third the wires on the end which need to be wired into the fusebox.

I always thought that the red wire was a live wire and would be the wire that was attached to the fuse, and the black wire would be the wire that's grounded.  My issue is the sticker on the box says that the red wire is the + and the black wire is the - (ground wire).....BUT....as you can see in the third picture there is a spade connector on the end of the red wire, I would have thought that this should be on the end of the black wire to make it easier to attack to a ground point?

What do people think?

Thanks in advance people.  Sorry if this reads a bit rambly, ive been on nights and need sleep!

Red to positive (+) red (supply from fuse box) and connect the black (-) to the chassis or other suitable ground point. I wouldn't worry too much about what connection types were on as supplied.

I used one of these to connect into my fuse box http://www.amazon.co.uk/Add-A-Circuit-Fuse-Holder-Standard-20amp/dp/1550063146

Thanks for the reply Greg, that's what I was thinking but it was just the fact that the red + wire had the spade connector that threw me.

Need to order one of those add-a-circuit fuses too.

Thanks

Would the spade connector on the red wire allow you to plug into an unused slot in the fuse box?

Good point well made. I didn't think about that.

But if I did it that way there would be no fuse protection on the camera?

I think I'll just cut the spade connector off and get an add-a-fuse to plug it into a switched live.
