towing mods

Featured Replies

Anybody tow regular with there octy? What mods have you done or would suggest?

Jim

Stronger rear shocks as towbar is along way from rear wheels

Upgraded back bush's and a remap always helps

Ko4 oops edit lol no turbo? Sorry, been drinking, pardon I.

I found towing ~1 tonne of trailer, track car, wheels, tyres, fuel cans, tools and other clobber with a standard-ish vRS to be absolutely fine. Alright, it's not the most ideal tow car and "only" does 25mpg while towing but for the dozen or so times I need to tow each year, it is perfect for me.

Mines a 110 tdi asv eligance estate all stock . I was thinking of instead of just replaceing the rear shocks and springs with new upgrading them if there's a heavy duty option or even stiffer standard height set?

Jim

You could try 30% uprated gas shocks, Bilstein, Monroe etc could be a good shout. Not sure how they'd go with standard springs, could be ok if brand spanking new.

Standard VRS, I tow a 1.3 tonne caravan fully loaded car with kids bikes etc. No problems whatsoever with stability or caravan sitting too low. The stock shocks and springs seem fine for towing

DOH - helps if I read the fact you are in a diesel !

Doesn't the spring rate on the vrs get uprated slightly with the drop in ride height? OP is in a tdi estate, probably a wee bit softer, not much admittedly but could be enough to pull the rear down more?

I made that mistake when I was half cut last night haha.

Suppose abit more oomph from a remap wouldnt go a miss on a 110tdi, the extra torque will help for sure but it depends what you towing i suppose

A 1200kg caravan plus family is there a decent plug and play rowing type chip or who would be best for remap in the north east?

If you want to do it on the cheap you could try blacksmoke.co.uk they get some good reviews and you do it yourself. Or look for a decent place near you. The max towing weight stated for the 110tdi is 1300kg so a little extra torque would certainly make your towing abit less stressful in my opinion anyway. I havent towed with either of my octavias so dont know how the handle lol

I'm sure someone on here had a plug and play one for their diesel from blacksmoke on here recently and was pretty pleased with it as I recall.

Just found it in my content. Says all details on the blacksmoke website, load it onto ecu yourself. Good prices and good gains, he got their clutch saver map.
