Rear bearing problem.

Featured Replies

Hi.

I've just bought my first skoda.

Only paid 550 for it to get back and forward to work. Ha

It's a fabia 1.9 tdi and hope to get it remapped soon I like it so much.

Problem is I've been told that the back wheel bearing had gone and it is making quite a lot of noise! Especially at high speed. Is it dangerous?

Has anybody or does anybody know of someone breaking a fabia that would be willing to sell me a bearing?

I've been quoted over a hundred pounds for one and that's without labour. I can't really afford it.

If anyone can help or give any advise about the problem that would be great.

Thanks

Jack

It can be dangerous if it's really bad.

It's a very simple job.

Look on eurocarparts for a rough price of parts, wouldn't bother with second hand.

Hi fella

Who quoted that price. I would say looking at ebay prices expect to pay less than £40 for part. And if you havent got access to tools or even a press. Take to independant garage will only take them an hr to do. Cost 25 to 30 labour.

I wouldnt be driving at high speeds.

OK brilliant. Thanks. I have to drive about 25 miles down a duel carriage way every day there and back from work, do you think that is too dangerous to last until next Saturday when I can replace.

Id say yes.driving at 56 wont even annoy the hgv drivers for a week ☺

Can't say without seeing it really. If you know a part is failing it makes sense to fix it before using the car.

I don't understand what you mean. Would I be OK do you think if I go back route round the houses at 40 would last a week?

If you jack the car up, can you wiggle the wheel? Is it excessive? What does it feel like if you turn the wheel by hand with it jacked up? If the bearing is collapsed and isn't working properly and the inner race is possibly grind away at your stub axle, the stub axle could also need replacing or it could snap and your wheel would come off... bit dramatic but certainly possible.

You've got to bear in mind you are asking for people's opinion on safety based on a limited amount of information so it is only fair you should expect worse case scenarios.

As ash has said.we dont know without looking at it ourselfs how badly worn it is.

Ive taken risks before driving with a badly worn bearing and wish i never. If your unsure what your looking for then dont drive it and get it sorted next week

And to add further, the bearing is there to add a low friction transfer from the axle to the wheel. If it's on its way out, this friction will be increased and that is a bad thing lol.

Wheel bearing.... IMO 50 miles a day is pushing a failing part. If it's really the bearing and it's making audible noises then it's hurting.

Better to get it fixed sooner rather than later. Also suggest this is something for a fully equipped garage to complete.
