Knocking noise

Featured Replies

Hello just wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue?

I have a knock on the front of my car. This knock only occurs when I go forward or in reverse when the car has been standing and it seems to be when the steering is turned.

It will also happen when I'm driving normally and stop and reverse.

The knock is a single clunk and then it's gone but it seems to be getting louder. :(

I'm a tech and know what to check ,I've checked the whole suspenion over and there is no fault to be seen.

Thinking it may be the steering rack at fault .

Is there any know faults on the racks?

Any help would be great thanks

Forgot to mention it's a fabia Monte Carlo 1.6tdi 2011

Unsure about the steering part of it but mine used to knock once when going in reverse after standing for a while, turned out to be the brakepads moving in the calipers because they werent an exact fit, have seen a few reports of the same. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the input .

I have striped and cleaned the brakes there's no movement in the pads.

I seem to recall a post a few weeks back regarding the steering rack joints not being greased in the factory and being sorted by the dealer, can not seem to find it now though. Just affected specific model too I think. Perhaps someone can clarify?

I have changed the tie arms a few months back as there was play in the joints.

So not sure it would still apply ?

What sort of mileage is it on?

I've had similar from brakes in the past also - caliper bolts not done up correctly, and movement from the pads.

It's on just under 80k now out new pads and discs on last year.

But striped them down 2 weeks ago and cleaned them

"But stripped them down 2 weeks ago and cleaned them" - would have no effect on them whatsoever.

If there is a margin of radial movement of the pads within the calipers (which is quite normal) clean or unclean will not alter that mechanical measurement in any way.

The noise is to loud to be the brakes.when I striped the brakes down there was no movement on the pads . I have experienced that issue in the past.

There is steering rack and control arm issues with mk2 Fabias and. TPI for this. Speak to a Skoda Dealer Service Manager or Master Tech on this. Have the issue checked if you can not find the fault. It is not a broken spring???

The cars on coilovers and a polybushed front end. The noise was still there before this work ,but lately has become a consern . I will see if skoda have any know faults regarding this on Monday

Pity you never mentioned that in the original post, seeing as it is rather important to the possible cause.

?

Who fitted those?

Also a pity the cause of the clunk was not diagnosed and resolved / repaired before modifying.

But thats why many use a Mechanic rather than a Technician.

Anyway there is the issue with the Steering Rack and trackrod ends, so be sure the person you talk to does the proper search on the

issue, and does not just say, 'never heard about this'.

As a tech I mean I'm a mechanic I've worked as a mechanic for 8years and I know my stuff I fit everything on my own car. I didn't mention the modified parts as I wanted to know if there was any known faults before the finger is pointed at the modified bits.

Also the fact he said the noise was there before the mods kind of rules that out.
