Glow plug light

Featured Replies

Could read old glowplug problems but couldn't find new header ,so apologies if I'm in the wrong place.

Have Dec 2009 VRS Octavia, caught the nearside front rim on the kurb (alternative was getting my offside mirror taken off by van man) , glow plug light came on. Have ignored it and 4 days later motoring in slow mode with light constantly on. A previous post kindly listed possibilities, but not likely order, can anyone prioritise this list before I spend on the diagnostics

1) Brakelight switch
2) Throttle position sensor
3) Exhaust gas pressure sensor
4) G235 Exhaust temperature sensor bank 1
5) Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
6) Blocked turbo vanes

You ideally need to get a scan done mate. Even a cheap fault reader should point you in tje right direction.

It could be literally anything, hope it's cheap.

Agreed - the flashing glow plug is used as a catch all error for those that don't fit into any other error categories which means it's pretty much meaningless without checking the fault code itself.

Brake light bulb blown?

Dave

The MkII Octavia has a bulb monitoring system. A blown bulb generates a different warning light...

Not on my MkII - when the brake light blew some time ago the glow plug light came on. Maybe you're referring to a FL?

Dave

All UK spec MkII Octavia's (both pre-FL and FL) have the cold start diagnostics that constantly check the conditions of the bulbs.

The orange warning on the dash is also on all Octavia's, on cars with Maxidot the exact bulb is identified on the display as pictured above.

There have been reports of faulty brake light switches and bulb holders triggering the glowplug warning light...

The glowplug light will register a fault code which can be read using VCDS.

For the blown bulb warning light from the manual:

The warning light comes on for a few seconds after ignition is switched on and goes out after several seconds.

If the warning light does not go out or comes on when driving, a bulb is defective.

The following text as an example will be displayed in the information display*:

Dipped beam front left defective!

A peep sounds as an additional warning signal.
