Intercooler pipe question

Featured Replies

Hey guys, driving along this morning and a huge bang comes from under the bonnet, and the car splutters pretty much to a halt. Taking a look the intercooler pipe (at least I think it is, to the left of the aux drive belt) has come away. I push it back on but as soon as I hit 1500+ revs it pops off again. The turbo doesn't work and the engine itself keeps spluttering. Managed to slowly drive it into town.

It is in the garage just now, but my question is, once the pipe is fixed will the turbo etc be fixed with the issue?

I guess I am just worried that it could have damaged the turbo.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Don't think you'll have a problem, jre. A small connector pipe went on my old Tdi Passat a few years ago - the inter cooler feed pipe. Engine is just not getting enough air to run correctly. Once pipe is sorted it'll be OK . Diagnostic fault code may need resetting. Passat was Ok tho. The short length of rubber pipe that went on mine was stupidly expensive for the size of it tho - £40 I think. Anyways- all best with it.

Hey Dithane, thanks very much for the reply, that helps put my mind at rest!

Do I have to do a reset on the diagnostic fault? I just imagine the garage will charge a fair bit as they usually do just to plug the machine in. Will it cause problems later if I don't?

Thanks

James

running 2.5 bar of boost mine popped off a few times sounds nasty but its nothing to worry about new pipe and she'll be brandnew

Cool! Thanks, just waiting for the garage to call! Did you adjust your boost to 2.5? I haven't made any changes but I guess it is just one of those things?

the standard pipes are rubbish, they may quote you for a new pipe which might be more expensive that you want. Plenty of posts on here about it and how to fix permanently (upgraded/diy pipes) or temp (zip ties, screws, heat shrink). Might be worth having a read before the call so you know your options.

boost was turned up with map im running 280bhp bost pipes are a problem with these cars hence why a lot of people fit after market intercoolers and run their own boost pipes with clamps instead of the clips that are used with standard pipes

On mine, the pipe actually burst ! It also blew a hole in the sound deadening material under the bonnet. I got duct tape to wrap around it to get me home. The duct tape (several layers) wasn't up to the job though - had to get the new piece of pipe. Eventually!

There were no codes to reset in Passat (a 1999 car) - I doubt that you'll have any issue either. I'm just not familiar with the newer cars. Reading on here, there seems to be darn codes tracking everything now!

All best, man.

Back from the garage! No charge :)

The clip had disappeared, so they just put on a new one, been out in it and no problem. Will keep some duct tape in the car for any future mishaps!

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated!
