1.6 tdi mpg advice in Milton keynes

Featured Replies

I have recently bought a 2010 1.6 tdi octavia elegance, super impressed with the car but my mpg I'm getting from the car is a bit disappointing, I spend almost all my time driving around Milton keynes so a lot of stop start driving which I understand will have a effect on mpg, but does anyone have any advice on getting best mpg in this area? And any driving styles/tips to keep the dpf in good working order?

Thanks in advance

I work in Milton Keynes, commuting in from Bedford most days.  With all the roundabouts, the temptation is to try and get up to the speed limit between each one.  This typically means brisk acceleration and then firm braking on approaching the next roundabout.

Making a bit less progress between roundabouts and lifting off much earlier before each one makes a significant difference to my fuel economy.  It also takes very little (if any) extra journey time.  Most of the cars that come flying past me at 70mph+ I catch up at the next roundabout anyway....

If you can stagger journey times as well it makes a big difference.  The traffic levels at 4:50pm compared to 5:10pm are very different. I'm lucky to have the flexibility to get to the office pretty early and then generally be on my way before the mass exodus.

My MK3 1.4 TSI is averaging around 46mpg overall - with 80% or more of my miles being this work commute.

Ah I've been doing that myself, rarely ever touch the 70mph mark, generally reach 50 then let the car slow itself down through the gears and try to at least approach the roundabouts on a roll but as you say driving times can make a huge difference.

How's your 1.4tsi on city driving?

How's your 1.4tsi on city driving?

Short journeys in town from cold tend to be high 30s to low 40s.  If the car's already warm or the traffic is light then mid 40s in town is possible.

Highest I've seen on Maxidot for the commute run is 54 mpg.  Getting stuck behind one of the few X5 coaches that sticks to the 50mph speed limit for its class has some benefits...

Lets put it this way, i do around 850km, give and take 50km from full tank until reserve light appears. Getting between 5.5 to 6.0 liter on maxidot. I have people, golf most, showing averages 5.0 liter or less but guess what they are also getting around 850km per tank, Octavia maxidot average seems more correct. If you drive city mostly you may drop to 750km, +/- 50km. Do the averages testing refueling.

And yes seems this 1.6tdi burns more fuel in city than the 1.9 tdi, highway the same
