Android head unit fitted

Featured Replies

Finally got my head unit fitted, the only thing left to do is fit put the RCA cables through to the boot, the sub is taking high level feed from the rear speakers at the moment which isn't ideal.

My experience so far:

It didn't come with a cage so I had to buy one. The generic trim which came with it was too small for the head unit so I had to make one, this was from black sticky-backed foam from Hobbycraft stuck to a sheet of card and cut to fit. The result isn't brilliant but it'll do for now until I think of something better. Easy to fit generally, though I had to cut the brace out of the back of the radio slot, as it isn't deep enough otherwise.

GPS antenna has plenty of cable so it is easy to find somewhere to locate it. I've tucked mine down between the dash and the windscreen and hid the cable behind the dashboard trim, it is out of the way and doesn't seem to be causing any reception problems.

Wiring adapter needs the red and yellow wires swapping and I didn't have any way of pushing the pins out. My Sony one had bullet connectors so I cut the wires and used bullet connectors here too.

Dimmer wire, I connected it to the +ve to the bulb in the fuel cap button, it needed extending a bit though.

Head unit itself:

Sound quality is decent enough. The default media player is crap, so I started using Poweramp instead. Didn't bother with the default navigation, I just installed CoPilot instead. It had some version of Torque with it, but I already had Torque Pro so replaced that.

Standard Launcher is functional but not pretty, so I replaced that with Launcer Pro 2, much nicer.

I can't figure out the steering wheel controls.

It will dim with the headlights, but doesn't dim very much. I'm trying to figure out how to change this. I'm experimenting with Lux Dash as well.

Bluetooth had no problems making or keeping a pairing with my phone. Calls are nice and clear (I guess, people don't keep asking me to repeat or speak up, like with my Sony)

Supports screen mirroring, but I haven't tried it yet.

Radio seems ok, but reception wasn't the best with my old head unit anyway so maybe needs the ariel booster putting back in.

There is an app to control a PC DVB stick, so I'll be trying this at some point, for DAB radio in the car.

Anyway, here is is with Torque:
